Impreza steering rack mod
Discussion
The below circuit can easily be altered so that it connects to the fuel pump relay rather than the alternator, thanks to phazed for pointing out that if the circuit is wired to the fuel pump relay, when the fuel pump primes it also acts as a PAS circuit test by running the PAS Pump during the fuel priming and you should be able to hear it run
When using electric PAS there is the advantage of being able to keep the PAS working even if the engine cuts out as long as the battery is good
The operation is simple
1) Turning the ignition on switches a negative through a relay to the main pump relay coil
2) The alternator switches a positive through a relay to the main pump and its relay coil which activates it
3) The main relay once activated holds itself in by switching its own switched positive to its own relay coil
4) The hold-in circuit is broken by turning the ignition off and the cycle is ready to go again

Use a self latching relay?
I'm not 100% sure what you mean by self latching but it does sound close to the method I was thinking aboutI've now sorted it and will post in a while, see what you think
A self latching relay is NO, it just requires an energising current to switch it, it then stays closed until power is removed. Give it a switched live, energise from the starter circuit and it will stay latched until the ignition is turned off. If you feed it a permanent live it'll never switch off

I understand now, well I think I understand, I think you must have misunderstood something that you read on the internet, I think you possibly read about a relay hold-in circuit that someone had called a self latching relay. I think......?????but really don't know
It’s just terminology, everyone called them self latching where I worked Just finished fitting the new Subaru rack with Vauxhall Astra electric steering pump. Not had chance to drive it but early testing suggests its a massive improvement over the manual rack. I can now with almost 1 finger turn it lock to lock. I did do a full photo build and a parts number list from start to finish but it needs finalising and its a big document. I hope to be able to make it available when I have a little time to everyone.
Many thanks to all those who helped along the way.

I was lucky with my ones. I cleaned them up and fitted them and they didn't leak or have any play in them! The are much better quality than the TVR racks.
