Discussion
Thanks to everyone for the congrats – looks like I'll be able to speak from my own experiences at last and not 'well, in a previous thread bla blah ...'.
Lee – the very best to and yours (you know what I mean).
Come on Dex – you know you've gotta do it

People have already said it but as stated before mine is a 4.0HC model. It says so on the original order to the factory (how many people still have them?) and is also indicated in the owners manual.
They say 275bhp which is supposedly due to a couple of head changes (polished and ported) and a slightly higher compression (maybe a ECU change too, but not sure). It probably isnt 275, but it is definately more than the 240 (which also isnt 240, but I will conveniently skip that for the moment). The charactistics of the engine are slightly (only just really) different to that of a 4.0 model. Quite a lot more torque (305 lbs) and a little smoother to rev up the range - they are slightly quicker than a 4.0 model and a nice compromise on the 5.0.
I thought that the 4.0HC replaced the 4.3 but I stand corrected on that one - see another thread by me - in that the 4.3 was available at the same time as a 4.0HC. I guess that this is yet another instance of TVR and their model differences.
As for the 5.0 and 5.0HC debate - I understand that the first 5.0 model cars (on the Griffith as the Chimaera didnt get them till later) were 340bhp models. These were a little lumpy in traffic so the detuned it slightly to get to 325bhp - I think that name 5.0HC was retro-fitted to the original higher output engines even though they werent officially classified as HC engines.....
Then again, TVR Power do alsorts of things to engines on customer orders - there is no knowing what engine has what power - as someone has already posted to this thread with a 250 4.0 engine - ported and polished I understand (but not higher compression that is on the HC). Who knows - I could be talking out of my rectum again... it has been known.
Cheers,
Paul

My 4.0 says 400 on the engine, so perhaps the one with 250 on the engine is actually a 2.5 litre

Sorry to disappoint you but the 250 is underneath a 400. I would attach a photo but the car is at Westovers at present due to a duff speedo. The Steve Heath bible includes the 400 gas flowed engine (@250 bhp) in the table of (some) of the engine varients - page 28. It may not be much of an increase from the 240 but does indicate there are other versions about. The evidence (from a previous owner) on a dyno indictes the flywheel bhp should be not too short of 250. The same table shows the 400HC as 275bhp at slightly higher revs than the 400 and gas flowed version, and a higher max torque.

And whats all this bickering about HC or not HC???? Its a TVR after all, for gods sake, it does'nt matter. Should'nt think Mike brought the car on the strength of it being a HC anyhoo?
You all sound like Ex Cavalier and Mondeo drivers carping on about my GLS this and his Ghia X that.Trust Bennno to stick his oar in!

When I spoke to TVR Power about my HC lump they said that it had head work, different cam profile (same as used in the 500 I think) higher compression, double valve springs. I think also they have duplex timing chain's. The guy also called it 'Speed 8 spec'
Still sound luverly though, not matter what spec they are.
Still excited Mike

Mikey,
Glad to hear you have finally done it.
Take care and enjoy.
Brian
Thanks Brian – a slightly different green than yours otherwise roughly the same I think! And not from you know who.
No, gonna pick it start of week after next Harry (24th?). Too busy workwise etc (yes I know!). No really, just have not got the time before then – nearly messed up a couple of jobs by taking time off to buy the thing!
