Took the Chim for a run to my parents yesterday (about a 120 mile round trip) and noticed on the way back a fairly persistent stutter/hesitation over 3000rpm. Below 3000 it runs perfectly. It was making the drive very jerky and was very noticeable. It's always had an occasional hesitation but this was way worse than usual.

It hasn't been for a run for a couple of months due to busyness/bad weather and it was very hot yesterday so wondered if that might have something to do with it? Other than this, the engine generally runs really well, always starts first time etc.

Any ideas of stuff for me to check out?

I think i would look at ignition components. More than likely ignition amp or coil. When were they all last renewed.

Whilst your at it, Plugs, leads, rotor arm, dizzy cap.

Worth renewing all these periodically to save problems.

Have a look at this chap on Ebay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-3-9-3-5-V8-Blue-Di...

There`s a few of us on here running his products with good results. He is also a helpful chap.

This!

A high rpm misfire was the first sign of impending trouble in my recent woes. Eventually the engine became a non-runner. This turned out to be a failed coil. Mine was also running perfectly at lower revs.

Have a look at the vacuum advance pipe that goes from the dizzy to the plenum, one of the elbow? rubbers split on mine and gave a wierd misfire type thing!

An air leak would, however, give very noticeable idling/low rpm running problems - and this one seems to be running perfectly below 3,000 rpm...

My first guess would be an internal breakdown of the ignition coil, too. Did the car dispaly the symptoms right away or only with a warm/hot engine?

Only really when it was hot. It idles fine and it started/ran from cold with no problems.

Some good suggestions here, will check them out!

My bet is on the coil giving up on you, then.

If all the obvious are ok, as even a loose plug lead will give these symptoms

Take a good look at the Ignition Coil for any leaks, give it a shake, put an ice pack over it when the hot problem starts to see if this changes anything

My bet is Ignition Amplifier – as your car is a pre serp the Ign.Amp is fitted to the side of the Distributer where it gets very hot, on later cars this was changed to be fitted by the Coil as it was a problem where originally fitted

Since we're on the subject of coils....

My Land Rover (series 3 petrol) won't start when it's hot. ie. It'll start fine first thing in the morning, you drive off to work and pull up at the petrol station, fill her up and then the thing won't start again, just cranks over and over. You leave it for an hour and then it's fine. Doe this sound like a coil? I've got a new one coming anyway so I'm hoping it is.

Sounds more like a fueling fault to me, most likely a sensor or actuator fault that makes the car behave like on a cold start when in fact, the engine is warm - overfueling/flooding in the process.

Changed the ignition coil the other day and it's been driven this weekend with no problems.

Fingers crossed...

Thanks all! smile
