Coolant leak

II have been struggling to find a coolant leak but by chance yesterday spotted it was weeping from the block behind the water pump. Am I right in thinking there is a separate casting which the water pump bolts to? What I can't see too well is how this casting bolts to the block, are there some behind the water pump?

It had a recent water pump before I bought it and now I wonder if this why it had the water pump replaced in the first place.

Hi

I had the same problem after replacing my water pump.
Some of the long bolts go into the water gallery, these bolts have sealer on originally, I needed to put sealer and Dowty washers on these to resolve the problem.

I hope this helps and saves you some time, you will see the water drips on the long bolt heads.

Thanks Mr Nordic, my bolts as dry but I can see it weeping from the block face. I cant work out whether I need to take the lot off or not as it appears the water pump doesn't bolt directly into the block but onto another casting first. It is this casting behind the water pump where the leak is. Not sure if this makes sense or not.

Hi D,

That casting houses the oil pump, covers the tming chain and the distributor mounts onto it.

If the leak is between the water pump and that casing it should just both faces cleaning and only need a gasket with a bit of luck.

It's not leaking between the water pump and casting but between the casting and the block unless it's dripping down from somewhere else. Is it possible to leak between this joint?

Hmmmmm mine seems to be leaking in a similar place to this but there was no resolution in the thread.

Is it worth pulling the bolts which go into the water gallery and putting some sealant on them? Anyone know which these are?
