I can not make my mind up what to do....

I have a 1996 Chimera with 115K on the clock now its a bit tired but running ok. I have a 4.6 bottom end with a slipped liner I did intend to fix this and swap it all over but still not gonna see over 300BHP unless serious money is spent..

I also have in my garage a 402bhp Cossy 2.0 Turbo engine. Im seriously tempted to fit this instead. im sure is will go in with minimal work a few mounts etc..and they have all the rights bits to start with steel crank, rods etc...

I know I would lose the glourious v8 Sound but the cossy engine did have its own fantastic sound in my escort. And did produce 380ft torque. To get this BHP from a V8 rover would cost thousands.

There are plus and cons to the conversion but it seems silly to throw big money at a v8 to get the BHP when you can go down the tried and tested cosworth route...

Whats everyone think???

Certainly make it individual.
And as you say it does make sense power wise.........

How do the engines compare weight/size wise?
Would the four pot go in as far back as the V8?

Just a shame to loose that V8 music........

Stick it in a mk2 Escort and get a yank V8 for the TVR.

Getting left for dead by hot hatches (no boost) and then a wodge of wheelspin when the boost comes in (at 4k revs - hopefully not round a corner).
Monster heat under the bonnet?

Understand your thinking, and no doubt Aston Martin could have got more power in their smaller car with a turbo 4 pot instead of V8, but it's just not right !!!

Contact this chap re: rebuilding the 4.6 and tell him you want 1 bar boost while he's at it. Sell the Cosworth engine to pay for it all....

I agree Richard but the point being...to get 350bhp from a cossy engine costs about £400 chip, 3bar map sensor and some green injectors and about 3hours fitting...

To get the same from V8 would cost 10 times more. Low comp pistons, new rods...I doubt if the standard crank would be strong enough...The heads dont flow very well without stage 4?? approx £1500..

And have you ever heard a Nobel...twin turbo ford engine...WOW!

I've always fancied a Griff with Escort Cosworth running gear. Completely perverse as it sounds, I reckon 330bhp (or 400 if you've got the lump/cash) and four wheel drive would be a right laugh. Granted you lose the V8 soundtrack...

So I guess you would end up with a modern take on this

you couldent generate anymore heat under the bonnet of these cars with that standard catalyst(furnace) sited in the wrong place, along with its two smaller siblings.you may miss that sound though,no substitute for cubic inches......he he.

Do it m8
More or less the same dilemma as you, tho I wasn’t fitting mine into a tvr, nope it was going into me Datsun.
I chose a chimp 4.0 V8 over the YB, tho I did use the cossie T5 box
Now it’s all done I do looooove the sound and the looks, but I still wish I had gone for the YB’s superior power.
But its horses for courses I guess
hohum

Ps, and yes, I still have the 2wd mota sat in me shed waiting it's turn lol

I think i will go YB power...Will make a pretty special TVR and it can easily be converted back if its a pig!

Keeping it RWD, but just looked at the chassis and im sure I could transfer the 4x4 over as well pretty easily.....

I will keep you posted.....

If you wnt 400bhp you are probably going to want a new gear box.

Doesn't the Cossie use the same T5 box?
I don't know.

Also, and I don't mean to be derogatory (sp?) here, but can the Chimaera chassis take that sort of power and torque, or would it be rendered a point and squirt machine? Sounds a shame to lose balance and control at the expense of chasing power.

Sounds like an interesting project though!
The chassis is apparently rated to 400bhp and maybe a bit more - ask Jellison for details.

Im sure the chassis could manage 400bhp...better not make the switch to larger turbo and 8 injectors then...a REAL 550BHP!

The beauty is you can have 2 stage boost keeping it down for reliability and fuel consumption then flick of a switch and see ya later pretty much anything i can think of..

As for heat its not a major problem I ran the setup in an escort cosworth and with lagging etc bonnet temps can be kept right down..
And you just cant beat a turbo rush on high boost.

Im thinking my mind is made...

High mile TVR engine for sale soon...lol

Of a sort
Similar to look at but not interchangeable as such.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/070

Gear stick on a Cossie T5 sits approx 4” back, prop splines are diffo, speedo drive blanked as std on the TVR box, main mount on tail shaft is narrower spaced, release bearing carrier if diffo dia and size plus clutch splines are deeper.
Other then that they interchange lol

I’ve only gone from TVR to Cossie n not the other way around, but imho I believe it should just be a case of changing the clutch release bearing carrier (4 bolts) and obv the bell housing (4 bolts) for the matching Cossie items.
That way it will all bolt up snug still.
