warranty holdings experience
Discussion
i am having difficulties with the non-tvr dealer i bought my griff from re my rear diff. (technically it was a pre -existing condition) .it klonks when i reverse. i have been told by one dealer (who serviced the car days b4 i bought it) that it is a characteristic of the diff (griff 500 1996/7) and is just play, but have been to mole valley and towerview and both say diff needs to be replaced. my dilema is:- warranty holdings will only inspect if diff is stripped.
so do i take the risk or wait till it fails?
cheers

My personal point of view would be that theres enough to go wrong already.
If you've got a fault regardless of whether its covered or not it needs fixing.I wouldn't consider waiting until my diff failed and I was left somewhere with no way of driving the car.
Whats the advantage in waiting and perhaps causing more damage?

Warranty companies always get bad press
Bear in mind the warranty is a 'mechanical breakdown insurance policy' therefore it will not cover wear and tear if something is not broken then they will not pay for it
Also they may only contribute to the replacement as the diff being fitted would be better than that that the warranty was taken out on (betterment figure)
You need a sympathetic dealer who WILL find something broken

the only reason they get a bad press is usually cos they deserve it...as snap says tho, the secret is finding a dealer/independant who has a good rapport/understanding with the warranty people, they will always say 'it's down to wear and tear' and it's up to the dealer to convince them otherwise

Unbeliveable. This must top the list of 'They all do that Sir' stories. A small graunch being put into reverse gear, sometimes yes, but not when actually driving backwards!

Jody - it could be a worn UJ in either
the prop shaft or either drive shafts and it
could also be that the pre-load on the diff needs
adjusting.
I had this on mine (GKN) and ity's easy to adjust.
Just drop the exhaust - 1 bolt at rear and about 8
on a huge plate under neath.
Undo 4 prop shaft bolts (mark posioion first)
and you will be faced with a huge about 32 mm bolt
on the diff flange plate.
The TVR recommended setting for this is FBT
(Fecking Bloody Tight) 3/4 inch drive recommended.
Re-assemble is reverse of above.
Takes about 1.5 hrs.

hi all
thanks for the info, have been out of the uk so no change in situation yet. i have had the car for about 3.5 months and have covered about 2500 fun and exhilerating miles.
will be in contact with warranty holdings to confirm their standing, and have had plenty of bad experiences with other warranty companies before and if they can find a way to get out of paying they will.
cheers
