Just completed a refurb of my drivers seat, following the recommendation (and a sit in his car) of TV8. Original post is here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I cannot recommend this mod highly enough as the cheese cutter wires really do eat into the foam. Nothing a cheap rubber mat and some hessian can't sort out. At the risk of repeating, here is the process in pictures.
This view clearly shows how the wires cut into the foam. Crazy idea from the outset!

So, cut the mat to the width of the cheese cutter wires and cover it in hessian. (this helps it slide into place under the seat) Glue the whole let together using Copydex or similar.

Mark the position of clips which hold the seat cover down and cut holes in the rubber mat.

Remove the clips at the back of the seat which hold the leather to the support frame and start sliding the mat up between the wires and the foam.

Gently release the 3x clips half way up the seat to allow the mat to pass the clips and slide the mat into the final position.

Reattach the 3x clips.

Reattach the leather to the rear of the frame. The original clips are impossible to refit and will probably draw blood if you try. I made these out of galvanised wire. They do the job and won't be seen.

Job done! The seat won't look any different, as said in the original post but the difference in comfort is remarkable.

For the first time it feels like a seat, rather than a squishy old piece of foam. Anyone with a dodgy back will benefit from this cheap fix. Thanks to Graham and Nosh for the original posts and inspiration.
