I'v also had a chat with one of the guys who used to build the cars. There are two types of these plates and the ones show above (like mine) are the cheap ones. The more expensive ones have solid 'D' shaped sides and never break. TVR bought thecheapy ones when they were scrimping on the pounds. Its definitely easier and cheaper to fix in situation as suggested by haircut mike. This avoids messing up the geometry. Its been suggested just to weld the original back together and should have no further problems. This is what I'm going to do first and see how it goes.
