Jag XK wins Gong

What Car? Award for new Coupe

none
Last night was the night that What Car? magazine dished out its annual awards at a glamourous event in London.

The Jaguar XK won an award for "The Most Exciting Car to be Launched in 2006". Who voted for it? The readers of What Car? and 'Eve' magazine - a 'glossy' magazine for women.

There are already plenty of XKs being spotted on the road in the UK despite sales not officially starting until mid March.

It's the second gong for the Jag in recent weeks. Thanks to it's "Pedestrian Deployable Bonnet" - a bonnet that pops up if the car is involved in an impact with a pedestrian - it won a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.

Yeah. Anyone else think it's a little over-rated (at least looks-wise, I haven't had the honor of driving it).

Think the car has real presence in the metal. The great thing about this car is people are talking about it - like it or not at least the car buying public is taking notice.

Mmm, rather early victory suggest that we're looking at a dull year for car launches or is this going to be an award that Jaguar will have to grudginly accept from the nonsensical publishers who don't know shit about cars and figure now that they have that out of the way, they can get back to writing crap about stuff they do know.

I still don't like the headlamp design.

Well i feel its gonna be quite an important car for Ford.

From my understanding Jaguar have been losing money for quite some time now. They need a model to really capture the public's interest.

Agreed. I think is one of few cars where the back actually looks better than the front. It looks a bo=it gaping gob from the front, but I will reserve proper judgement until I see one in the flesh as photos can be misleading.

The pics don't do the car justice. Looks way better in the flesh. It drives beautifully too.

Roll on March, I have gotten used to the new Jag 'look' and think its a fab car. Wait till the launch of the XKR, now that will look aggressive while this looks a little submissive.

You will, Jag do a load of road testing round here, there's a lot of rag tops around by me at the moment. What brings you up to these parts?

It's pretty, but the outgoing car (especially the XKR) will take some beating in the looks department. I expected more.

They don't lack pace I can promise you that. I was pressing swiftly along a French autoroute a couple of months ago and felt the shockwave as three of them (on UK 54 plates) tore past. I had to rack it up to 1.35 to catch up and have a gander.

I thought it looked worse in the flesh than the photos. The photographer made an awesome job of making it as good as it looks in the official photos, I went to MPH05 looking forward to seeing it in the flesh. My first thoughts were "oh dear" looks like a hyundai coupe in the flesh (especially the front, not very impressive at all.

Regularly seen round Kenilworth too, often parked outside pubs.

I particularly liked a convertible version with a very noisy exhaust being driven by a well-preserved 50-ish lady.
