There is a reason why millions of taxi drivers and chauffeurs around the world drive Mercedes rather than Jaguar/BMW/Audi or any Japanese/Korean cars, and it is not for their looks.

Actually there are two reasons for the chauffeur trade.

All the taxis in Aus are Japanese.
Well apart from the Fords, Holdens, Mercedes etc, yes they are.

I'm 26 and I'd love to own a Jag. The new F Type and facelifted XE look absolutely superb.

I couldn't give two hoots what anybody else thinks.

Which is the right attitude! smile

I've owned quite a few cars of different types - each one, supposedly, marked me out as a particular character. If I'd taken any notice I would have checked into an asylum.

That's because non car people drive a Kia crossover which, ironically, would be more expensive.

Jaguar have been about pace space and grace with value being an important part. Some would argue they made the E Type and haven't been able to build anything that lives up to that hype.
It looks terms I don't think anything has been close

It would be interesting to find out what age is a person is and how that is related to whether we consider a Jag to a luxury product. Also the age at the time of ownership of a Jag.
Very true. Am in my fifties and wouldn't dream of owning a jaguar, they are still "old men's cars". The modern stuff to me looks just like a fake Aston Martin rather than exceptional.
Yeah my 550bhp XF is pure old man.

Depends what XF. Up to 2015 they’re a sports saloon or estate. Post 2015 they’re poor quality euro-boxes.
Remind me again how many times your pre-2015 car has broken down?
Zero.

Averages 23-ish. Never let me down, but has had a few warranty issues. But still been in the garage less times than our 2016 Golf we just sold.

Not anymore. I see it as more “Matalan”, for reference, Vauxhall would be “Primark”

That's only because they've never made a hatchback and for a long time their saloons had heavy wood, cream leather and chrome - not things that appeal to young people.

As a young person (26) who has driven Jags since 19, a hatchback Jaguar is a no for me, in the same way I won't own a A-Class, ect. I want a proper luxury car with cream leather & wood, which Jaguar have missed the mark personally recently- hence my switch to Mercedes.

I appreciate my taste isn't the majority for someone my age, but in my experience I am not alone...

Does it though?

The motoring magazines got given E-Types with high-compression heads and triple carbs so they might get to 150 mph on a good day even though they had a claimed 265 bhp before modifications!

I bought a BMW 123d in 2008 that was supposed to do 152mph with "just" 201bhp.

And my BMW Z4 Coupes with 265 real bhp had a 155 mph limiter, so I have to wonder how Jaguar measured their horses! rolleyes

You do realise that if you’re comparing an E Type output to a modern car you are comparing apples with oranges in terms of how bhp
Was measured right? The 265bhp would have been a bare engine whereas a modern car is measured at the wheel.

Interesting reading in this thread. I have an F-Type and think it's a bit of a paradigm shift from the typical Jaguar ethos. I've never had a bad word said about my Jaguar - in all honesty, everybody says "nice car" or "that sounds great" - even non-petrolheads. Funnily enough the only negative views I've had about my car are from Pistonheads..

My experiences show that the F-Type is seen as a respectable car. I don't think the public know it's got over 500bhp, and because Jeremy Clarkson said the noises it makes are cool, most people agree. When I bought my Jag a colleague bought a similarly-priced Porsche 911 (997.2 C4S) and we had a little poll going with the ladies in the office. I expected to lose but was amazed that the end result was 14-3 in favour of the Jaguar.
I think the F-type is one of the best looking cars on the road and couldn't give a monkeys what Jeremy Clarkson or the kids on Pistonheads think, all the kids on Pistonheads go on about is BMW M3's and Porsche 911's which are bland to my eyes.
The last bit you wrote sent the cringe-o-meter off the scale mind you,lol
