Does anybody know roughly how many miles the tensioners last? And what date it stopped being a problem? And how much it is to get it fixed (at a dealer ) before the worst happens? I'm up to 53k on a March '00 XKR, and this has just started to get me nervous!

Cheers.

In theory they should last the life of the car as they are a non-serviced item. However, problems appear to have been happening with some cars from 45,000 miles upwards. Mine had covered 110,000 when the demons struck.

How much is peace of mind worth?

Cheers for that.

If it's £200, I'd pay it without a second's thought. £1000 and I'd probably chance it. Not sure about the prices inbetween!

Evening all. A question for those technical bods amongst us...

Can anyone explain to me the difference (if any) between a 'timing chain tensioner' and a 'timing chain tensioner pad/blade'?

Are they seperate parts (any idea of part numbers?) and can they be purchased seperately?

Many thanks,

Iain

My research is continuing...

I have found references to the 'timing chain tensioner blade' but only in relation to the PRIMARY chain. I am concluding from this that there is no 'timing chain tensioner blade' in relation to the SECONDRY chain - is this correct?

It's worth doing on a 2000 car me things. It is in the £500 region.

If you go through an independant it will be cheaper.

Mine got the 'death rattle' at around 116K. (managed to get 1000 miles with the rattle as I was in Northumberland at the time Didn't know what the noise was, I was obviously very fortunate).

Cost for new tensioners £1000. Warranty company paid £750. Kept the old ones for a while - they were clearly shot!

Cheers - that's kind of borderline. Might leave it till the 60k service and get them to take a look then.

Problem is that I don't know of any decent indys in the area, whereas the dealer is literally 800 yards from the office. Might have to do a bit more hunting around...

Hey JSG - good to see you back posting again.

Jagman suggested about £700 at RG for tensioners when I asked a few months back, which would be about right as they wont be the cheapest around.

I wonder if there is a way to inspect them with a scope without doing too much dismantling. I'll ask when I talk to them next (s/b this pm).

BTW Jagman did suggest a correlation between over running the oil change intervals and tensioner failure. Old oil not lubricating so ell I guess.

Cheers,

That's really tough luck Groomi, hope it all works out in your favour in the end.

Does anyone here know when these chain tensioners were modified? My car is a XJ8 n/a 4.0ltr V8 and is I believe a steel lined engine first registerd in May 2000.

Can I point anyone worried by the Nikasil bore problem in the direction of a little piece of information that I came across for all XJ's and maybe XK's as well.

www.go-lpg.co.uk

(click on "conversion gallery" in the left - green panel) scroll down to "Jaguar".........Scroll down again to: 3.2 and 4ltr V8's.............scroll again to base of page and click on "Nikasil lined Engines" within the white panel, (sorry but the link refuses to work directly!

basically if your vin no. ends in 8***** (last 6 characters start with an 8) then it's Nikasil

If your vin no. ends with an F***** (last 6 characters start with an F then it has steel bores)

I've included the site address concerned as it may be useful to many of us in the future and as a way of thanking them for publishing this imformation as "Jaguar" seem "very reluctant" to let this kind of information .....out.

Anyway, back to my request, does anyone know when the tensioners were modified?

Keep us posted Groomi!

8 Pack. The tensioners were modified twice during the production of the 4.0L V8.

The fist modification involved ading an extra spring to the original plastic tensioner (and a little strengthening). This had the effect of extending the life of the tensioner, but with the side effect that if it did actually fail, the extra spring would keep any warning rattle to a minimum...

The metal tensioners I think were introduced in 2000, but I don't know any exact production dates I'm afraid. if I come accross anything I'll let you know.

With regards to my motor, I'm currently crafting another literary masterpiece to the warranty company together with some very useful diagrams and part numbers which should support my case strongly - will be interesting to see what they come back with this time...

Many thanks for that info Groomi, it's only done 25k yet but I'm worried about the future.

Really hope you get yours sorted, for even if they do it for free, it's still a stressful time for you, and being without the car as well makes it worse!

Good Luck!

... And the last six digits of mine start with an A.

It's a March 2000 car, and when I specifically asked them to check for such issues at its last service, they came back saying it's not got Nikasil bores. x2 (Have that in writing on the service report)

Cheers, bud. It's been a while, but some things in life are "normal" again now. Still not going on as many runs out as I'd like, but it's all getting better.

Update.

I've had a reply back from the warranty company today affering a 'goodwill gesture' of £4k towards the bill (ie. just below half the amount). They have not accepted any liability.

I feel an all guns blazing approach will be employed in my response as I have them by the short and curlies now.
