The OP suggests that Jaguar's action was linked to regulation.

It wouldn't be the first time that a car left the factory with engine management software that made it illegal, of course...
LadyB8 has a diesel Merc and as we've all discovered the manufactures were playing somewhat fast and loose with the laws when they made these things and have been found out. Her Merc went in for its annual service last year and had its firmware updated as part of the whole "we all got caught" thing. Well now it they've totally buggered up the whole lag thing, it's much harder to get the turbos spinning before the car moves so getting it out junctions is no longer as relaxing as it once was. I doubt that we'd have bought the car if it worked the way it does now when we drove it first. But it turns out that the way it was when sold wasn't exactly legal.

Well I thought it was aimed at me as I was quoted. I have an XK140 FHC, Vitesse 2.0L, 1961 GMC Apache V8, V90 and Transit Connect. I’m looking at an electric car currently.

I don’t judge others because they don’t have a gated driveway and live on a council estate. Zulu10 what a horrible judgemental person you are. The OP loved the noise his car made. JLR had no rights to retrospectively alter such a fundamental part of its character.

I didn't realise Pistonheads was full of Barry Boys either.

If I had bought a perfectly legal car and liked the sound I would be furious if the dealer retroactively changed it. It is no longer the car I bought. The OP is fully justified in being upset.

Those who do not like the noise are off topic.
This is not somebody with a go -louder aftermarket exhaust. I have a few cars that are not really quiet. No modifications and I do not rag the hell out of them on residential streets.

Bad behaviour is an entirely different issue than an unasked-for modification to your property.

The question is why have JLR changed it. They only reason I can see is because it was non-compliant, either because it wasn't compliant at the time (due to type approval or poor software change control), or because they applied a fox that is generic across several model years, some which are and some which aren't impacted by changing regulation.

Sounds like a general fox for convenience.

fk me,
Why are the illiberal woke snowflake Muppets hanging around here?

Is there no forum for the whiney wimpish poppets to gallantly virtue signal, revel in wokeness and arrange for collective circle jerks over an effigy of Greta?

Here, we love all that goes with being a car enthusiast. That might mean celebrating ludicrous mode on my hugely resource hungry built Tesla or indeed the bellow&growl from Dodge Hellcat.

OP I sympathize with you.

To those that think he is in anyway wrong, fk off and find a forum dedicated to pious woke illiberal snobbery.

The Tams now sold, so the search for a V8S starts, just one question, does decatting enhance the pops and bangs, or are they “fake” created by software as opposed to the batch injection on the Speed 6 engine

Certainly a good post, but oh my, how PH has changed these days....this thread and few others in NP&E are almost enough to make me think my time here is coming to an end.

So much petty point scoring, trolling and returning bannee's with no real hard moderation....

Wasnt like this in Teds time...... frown

Those berating the OP clearly haven’t heard the pops and bangs that the OP describes.

That particular V8 Jag’s pops and bangs are glorious, and not in anyway the same as the “council” straight-piped Golf R that Barry down the road from you drives.

Those claiming the previous noises that the OP’s car made are evidently just demonstrating they know nothing about cars, because if they did, they’d know why the OP wants those noises back.

Shame on you all.

I think calling them pops and bangs does them a disservice really. I considered an F-type R and took one for a test drive. I'd call it the snarl to go with the V8 bark. It just wouldn't sound right if it sounded like a pussycat!

You do wonder if some of the people on here are actually petrol heads at all... especially if anyone on here seems to be slating the Holy Grail of what is now JLR corporation, as I found out when the diesel in my XJ decided to rotate its bearings at 60k.
We come on here for a bit of support and don't expect anyone on this forum to think any differently, but this is social media and if you put your head above the parapet, someone's going to take a shot... Personally I am not one for these pops and bangs, to me they do seem a tad contrived, I had a neighbour who left his house at 6am every morning in his CLK AMG Black, he literally woke everyone up in a 2 mile zone. It used to shout on start up and he was so deeply embarrassed but could not (or would not) do anything about it. I loved the noise, but after a few 6am start ups it got to a point where I was going to shove a whole load of wadding up his exhaust.... It didn't have a on/off switch.. But the F-Type does and I would be miffed it that happened to me... as
the pops and bangs were part of the character that made the OP buy the car, now Jaguar have removed this, in essence, they have fundamentally changed the cars character. And why do they sell the 5.0 AWD now that's still does this if its illegal.... Do BBR (Brodie Britain Racing) still exist, I am sure they could revert the software back to normal... either that or you could fit a cherry bomb. Hope it doesn't detract from what is a lovely car.
