Hi,

Basically I'm a 6th Form College Student that starts driving in very, very early May. I'm aspiring to a 2002/2003 VW Polo 3dr 1.2S(65). I can pick up a fairly decent one for around £3.5k, and insurance for my Mum & I is only £1321. Just wandering what other kinds of costs are going to be like on the Polo for myself, are they generally easy and cheap to run or can things get expensive?

Many Thanks

Tom

yikes Insurance £1321???????

Sure you've got that right?
Seems very expensive for mum and named learner driver.

really? I thought that was pretty decent for a 17yr old boy. My mates paying £1750 on a 55ps 03-reg 1.2 and another is paying £3k on a 51-reg Clio 1.2 Authentique.

Methinks that's the best decision given the circumstances.
No arguments with insurance co if a claim had to be made....which isn't gonna happen is it? wink

If it helps you to know, many moons ago, I did similar with a son @ your age.
I purchased a VW Polo for him to learn to drive in & use after test to college etc.
Easy to maintain, cheap to run & the usual VW reliabilty and handy for me to use when needed.
Have purchased Clio's as 2nd or 3rd cars but although a slightly better drive they can be a pain when they have a fault.
Anyone can fix a bog standard Polo but not every garage wants to be bothered fixing the niggles on a Clio, even Renault.
Mind you that doesn't put me off being a tad naughty & wondering whether to buy their 197 Sport hehe
Did order one but it never turned up at the dealer as promised, so cancelled order & got a refund.

I paid £600 for me as a named driver on my mums when i was 17 on a 2004 1.4 golf. If i was you id put your mum as the named driver and you main, youll be able to do that for about what your paying now and youll get no claims

Nice one, nail_it. Thanks, the idea is to get mine for learning in, to get to and from college in and maybe work. Another thing is I want one in silver so I can paint the mirrors and rubbing strips silver because my Dad's A6 is also silver so we've got the right paints. Also a plus if it gets scratched in the student car park, I can easily touch it up.

Aaaand nuhuh! I'm not likely to drive like a twot. I'd really rather prefer to keep my driving privelidge and I'd actually cry if someone damaged my own car or if I was stupid enough to do it. I've been driving on private property for about 2yrs now so I've a bit of experience (up to 40mph) in a varity of cars, tractors, engine capacities and transmissions. So fingers crossed!!

And thanks 00161wj, I'll give it a try.

Ok. So, logged onto Go Compare:

Own policy, me as registered keeper, owner & main driver with Mum as named driver = £2,180.97
Own policy, me as main driver, Mum as registered owner, keeper and her as named driver = £3,354.61
Mum's policy, Mum as keeper & owner with me as main driver = £1,270

Is it cheaper to say on a drive-way or locked garage, or will it make little difference?

Was there the option of: Mum owner/keeper, Mum Insure & you as a named driver (not the main driver)?

Also enter where the secure parking would be for the Polo.
Should slightly help reduce the price against ie: parked in a road etc.

yeah, I'll give that a try. All quotes are for it in the garage, although would that put the price up because it's possible the garage could collapse on it or something..?

Dont just trust sites like go compare for your best quote. Try them seperetly. My quote for the golf was from tesco. Also if your not going to be a boy racer try entering a high excess to bring the price down, a risk worth taking in my opinion.

00161wj your a mind reader smile
Was going to post similar.
Widen your search using moneysupermarket.com & others. Then get quotes from the separate sites.
Currently, have Tesco insuring my s4 & others cars. Sainsbury's were 2nd & Post office 3rd best quotes.
With 2nd son, Tesco was best on a Golf 1.4 I purchased for him to learn on.
Also, worth considering using the higher excess bands to keep the overall price down when a learner.

Cat D is a damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.

Ok, thanks!

Right, so now I just got a quote from Tesco for £920 & Direct Line gave me £849. Nice!

But I also need some help....

This morning a friend was driving up the back lanes to college, and had to back out of the way to let some cars pass, he backed into a wall. Shunted the rear bumper back a bit on the nearside of his 03-reg 3dr Polo and scraped it up pretty badly, also slightly dented the front of the rear nearside wheelarch and scraped it too. I can fix the bumper and I can push the dents out but I'm wandering whether Volkswagen 'Reflex Silver' and Audi 'Metallic Silver' is the same paint with a different name, if it is, I can touch up the damaged parts with my Dad's Audi touch-up kit.

Thanks in advance guys (and gals)
