140ps and 170ps TDI engines difference
Discussion
Are the differences between these engines purely down to an engine map? i.e would it be possible to get a good tuner get the 170 ps output from a 140 ps engine without affecting reliability, driveability etc. Or are do the engines have mechanichal differences? As the 170 ps version seems to be a fair bit faster than the 140 ps version.
I don't know, but keen to find out, as I have a 140 Audi A3.
I do know that my RX8 is 231 bhp petrol, and they did a 190 bhp petrol with no difference other than the map. The 231 revs higher, has very slightly less torque due to the map and does almost the same mpg.
A friend has a Vauxhall Astra 150 CDTI and had it re-mapped to 200bhp. Has more torque and power and they did it by programming the the injector pump to run at a higher pressure. It means your mpg computer in the dash is no longer accurate, as it 'counts' the injections. The fact each injection is at higher pressure and therefore puts in more fuel means they read low. Other than that he says it the best thing he ever did. Although the mpg computer is no longer accurate he says its about the same on fuel.
Someone else I know had their 1.9 TDI re-mapped and said it was alot quicker and about the same on fuel. At least the 140 engine is a 16v unit so has more potential than the 1.9 TDI.
I'm sure a 140 TDI can be chipped to 170 in the same way.

The RX8 231 engine is not just differnt mapping, the 231's engine has an extra port which opens up and the 231 revs to approx 9000rpm and the 192 to approx 7500rpm.
Alot of people seem to have the VAG diesels rempapped, I think the only downsides are extra black smoke from the exhaust and I suppose this would mean the clutch may/will wear out quicker.

I have an A4 2.0 TDI which was 140, after having it remapped its now at 180 (give or take a few) and I would thoroughly recommend it. It's like a different car. My friend has also has his 1.8T done and the performance from that is unbelievable. Let me know if you want the guys details of who did the remap, I'd highly recommend him
I have an Outlander.... Yes it has VAG engine on it.... And we bought the in House "Rallytronic" from Rally Art, which boosted the 140hp to about 167hp... so far no problem and the dealership confirmed that because that was in house tuning we dont loose the warranty....
The point is, you can use a chip tuning or box to boost your hps and your engine will survive...

I had my 1.9PD 130 engine remapped, mpg is ever so slightly better, especially when cruising.FoolOnTheHill said:

Many of the 170 are DPF equipped. If you are considering re-mapping, DPF cars are best avoided.
What is DPF? tstain said:
170 uses different injectors (piezo injectors)
and the unladen weight is about 6kg lighter so i presume some internal work and different turbo
It depends which one you are comparing, whether the PD140 vs PD170 or CR140 vs CR170.and the unladen weight is about 6kg lighter so i presume some internal work and different turbo
