Here's a question for you Dr G. Do you know if the paint on the current S4s/Audis is 'softer' than previously? I say that as I've picked up a few stone chips that seem to have gone through to the metal! Never had that problem with my previous Audis
Not just you, I don't know what the official line is but more often than not I go home with coloured fingers having spent half my day touching them in!Some colours are definitely worse than others, Phantom is notoriously fragile.

Power steering makes very little difference at motorway speed, it's only at town speeds where the pump is overcoming friction and the vehicle weight that you notice it.
Totally agree with you, however the issue is that the belts were slipping therefore the steering load was varying massively. Regardless of the extent of the effect of the fluid on the belts the fact remains that the steering is affected. Even if it wasn't to happen at motorway speeds it could easily happen when bimbling around town causing a big change in steering loading potentialy at the wrong time. The issue for me is that Audi refuse to acknowledge this as a safety issue when I believe it should be.

Interesting Obi. I actually had my service last week, I asked about a recall for the pump and provided the recall number to Swindon Audi to check. They told me it did not affect my car and hence it has not been carried out.
Edited to say mine is a Nov09 (59 plate) car with 5k miles. VIN number does not match the range posted on the Audizine forum.
its pretty easy to spot if youve got the plactic or metal pump, there are some pics on the audizine website which help. If I had the plastic one and knowing what I know now that at some point its very likely to go pop then id be jumping up and down to have it replaced as a matter of cause.Edited to say mine is a Nov09 (59 plate) car with 5k miles. what a pisser. I'd be asking for that in writing.
Dear Mr Customr,
Thanks you for spending 45k or so on our product. As you're aware we have recognised a fault on our cars relating to a plastic water pump housing which your car has. We've made efforts to replace these on cars from April 2010 onwards as so many of the things were failing, however as yours isnt broken (yet) we dont see any reason to replace it.
In our experience these will normally give up the ghost on you when youre 120 miles from home and cannot hire a car as its a Sunday, therefore with that in mind we look forward to your feedback on our Audi Roadside recovery service which Im sure will look after you wonderfully and we are very proud of.
Yours
Mr Audi Dealer.

anything?
my car only turned up this morning. turns out the parts on back order, but they wont oredr it until they've taken a look at the car which could be friday or early next week. so I have to wait another 3 days for them to even order a part thats on back order! bloody crazy.
meanwhile no loan or hire car and Audi UK have yet to respond to my email questioning the sanity of letting people run about in cars with known problems.
im losing faith in audi very very quickly and this is the first car ive ought from them. I had high hopes.

Obiwonkeyblokey, you and I are in a similar situation. My S4 had its SECOND water pump failure on 7 November (a Sunday!), the first one failed in November 2009, I suspect the colder weather increases the probability of failure. my car only turned up this morning. turns out the parts on back order, but they wont oredr it until they've taken a look at the car which could be friday or early next week. so I have to wait another 3 days for them to even order a part thats on back order! bloody crazy.

The situation you find yourself in may be worse than you are expecting. You're right, the part is on back order, "it'll arrive from Germany next week" except that next week it will still be arriving next week! I have asked what the time limit for fixing the car is; there isn't one, as long as they have given you another car (which doesn't have to be like for like).
If anybody else has the plastic water pump I suggest you get it replaced before it fails. Audi will deny there is a problem and tell you that forums are not official Audi information. Realistically, there is nothing Audi can do until they have some new pumps anyway.

I had this, albeit from a Ford dealer, and in the end they had my car for the best part of a month. Keep chasing them. Have they at least given you a decent courtesy car?following various email to Jermay Hicks and the chap who sold me the car from the audi fleet dept. I now have an A4 which turned up about 30 mins ago. It was at the discretion of the chap running fleet in Bristol and has come from him rather than a dealer loan car or an Audi UK car, so fair play to him. He was great to deal wiht initally and has maintained that. IF only he now had the backing of his brand.
either way, im mobile again now, it was getting cold commuting on my scooter!
I am however still pushing ahead to get answers from Audi UK about why I was in running around in the car in the first place with a known problem.

Seems I was lucky then with Audi Netherlands flagging my car for a water pump replacement when it went in for an oil service. I'm not impressed with the way Audi are handling this at all, there are plenty of people complaining on the US forums and various German forums (not checked any Dutch ones) so it seems a real "head in the sand" approach when a simple recall would make everyone happy. It's not as if it can be affecting a huge number of cars after all.
seems my car will be back tomorrow.
Im happy with the aftersales service from my local dealer on this issue, but still mightily pissed that Audis attitude in the first place was to wait until they break down rather than a recall. However my ffeling is that they dont want to recall when they havent got the parts. I would think that before this situation starts getting more and more out of hand and they start losing more face that they get some of these pumps in pronto and start calling people in.
