The AA warranty would only cover £35/hour labour leaving me to pick up the tab. I've put a call out to Inde-tech with a view to them doing the job as their labour charges are closer to the figure the AA Warranty will cover.
To be honest, it's a lovely car and I'd hate to go through the hassle of selling and buying a new one. Having said that, I really do not want the multitronic failing on me and being asked to cough up £4-5K as many people have commented here.
Thoughts on getting the ECU replaced by Inde-tech?

Shame about the warranty, did you buy that it did it come with the car, always worth checking what is covered, what the maximum labour rate is and what the cap is on a single repair when buying a warranty.
If they have an equivalent to the VAG 5051, so they can code it, and the correct oil filling tools. Would be an easy job for a VAG knowledgeable indy.

With so many faults surely this should fall under a manafaturers recall.
gearbox ECU i guess is made outside AUDI ( bosch? )although they retailed the cars.
Surely electronics should be covered by manafacturer and Audi should be representing its suffering public by getting the original supplier to pick up the cost of a part which is giving the Audi brand a bad name.
I own 2 Audi's
2003 A4 1.9TDI multitronic 83,000 Miles has has the ECU problem for last year ( I will not pay over £1000) until it breaks down completely. If it was not for my wife wanting an auto i would have got rid.
2002 A6 2.5TDI CVT Multitronic 137,000 miles ( On a reconditioned engine unfortunaly as cam follower broke and wrecked top end of engine last year.) £Was not going to pay £7000 to Audi so got a recon engine for £2700.( fingers crossed still OK sim months on.)
My beleif in Audi is going having owned VW/AUDI group cars all my life ( 10 cars from this group)
Perhaps as Jeremy Clarkson is right when he says they have become the "T055ER5" car of choice so time to depart.

Well I was just about to buy what I thought was going to be a nice family car 2001 A4 2lt se auto
75000 on the clock, timing belt changed at 70000. Then i read on, only to find that the multitronic gearbox had been stripped and rebuilt and new ECU at a cost of £1200. ok I thought, problem is over and done with but now after reading these posts I'm not so sure?
Advice more than welcome!!!

The petrol engine, generally dont have enough torque to get the clutch packs to judder on pull away, which is teh other common fault with diesel multitronic of that era.
And the other likely failure point the ECU, has already been done. SO its less likely to go wrong now than before.
But if you do a lot of miles and dont wont to run the risk and always be worrying about it, get a manual.

I have had the gearbox oil changed by Audi main dealer at 126000 miles on my 2003 1.9 tdi a6.... gearbox felt sluggish straight away and failed with flashing display and gearbox stuck in "safe mode" after few hundred miles. The fault is intermittent, only when the car is warm and accelerating heavily. Too much of a coincidence for me to be unrelated to the oil change. Is it possible that the failure has been caused by an incorrect procedure?
Apparently it needs a new ECU, or alternatively valve body, they won't know for sure until they change them!!!
Fault codes are:
18226 - Pressure Control Valve 2 (N216): Electrical Malfunction
P1818 - 007 - Short to Ground - Intermittent
17114 - Incorrect Gear Ratio
P0730 - 000 - - - Intermittent

Update on my petrol Audi A4 Avant. Information might be useful to other multitronic owners out there.
The AA Warranty (Gold) will cover the replacement of the ECU unit. This saves me as you'll all know by know £1000. I'm getting it done by Automatic Man who are based in West London and seem very clued up on multitronics.

Am considering buying an 02-04 3.0V6 A4 Cab for the missus and was just researching potential issues when I came across this thread. Pleased I have because I kind of assumed that an auto box on an Audi would be fairly bulletproof. But clearly the multi-tronic is not and am going to steer well clear.
From what I've read it seems that the manual is OK however my wife would prefer an auto. If I went for the auto box on the Quattro is this a completely different gearbox to the multi-tronic and will it be a safe buy or should I really go for the manual?
And, slightly O/T are there any issues with the 3.0V6 engine itself or any other big expenses that we should watch out for?

Tiptronics are bullet proof up to say 120k miles, then we have had one or two go bang but still very unusual. So if she wants an auto that not a problem, and the 4wd is very reasuring in poor weather.
Cambelt is complicated to fit and as such more expensive to change than most audi engines.
Good performance, rubbish fuel ecconomy.

It doesn't always recognise that it's in park (or neutral) when you turn it on, which means the starter won't go thanks to the inhibitor relay. I have noticed it slip the highlight over park and neutral off and on while the engine's running with no other effects (it is actually still in park/neutral, and it went in and out of drive fine).
So as the car is basically scrap if the gearbox goes, I've come up with a plan to add a switch feeding the starter soleniod power, bypassing the ignition switch and inhibitor relay ie I might as well bodge it as it's worthless otherwise
The manuals I have say the wire I need is red/black (but all the wires around there have black rubber sheaths over) and goes through a single connector on the driver's side which I think is in this block:

You sure its multi tronic, have you tried adjusting/checking the selctor cable before you rewire the car.
Definately a multi.... I even said on test drive it was so smooth an auto it felt like a CVT (don't think the dealer really knew what he was selling, and I didn't realise they exsisted in Audis). I bought a 2006 3.2 multitronic A4 cab which looks, sounds and goes quite well. Still trying to get use to the multitronic box which does feel really odd compared to a normal auto. Delay before car actually moves, and rolling back on hill starts is a bit of a pain.
When I test drove the car, which is from a Audi main dealer, the car had a judder setting off at low rpm. Only very slight, but just noticable. the saleman told me all CVT's do that and after a while i'd just get use to it.
I thought being Audi and only 30K on the clock it shouldn't be a problem. Bullet proof german technology.
Imagine my horror when i googled cvt and audi. Nothing but problems and the potential high cost of getting them fixed.
The oil in the box was oddly done at 28K, well before the 40k. I was wondering if the previous owner had problems and was advised to change the oil early (then got rid)
I would like to ask if the 2006 boxes are just as prone to failure as the earlier pre 2005 models and do they really judder slightly setting off on low rpm, like when you are just moving the car a few feet in slow moving traffic.

Hello, totally new here but felt compelled to post becasue I'm a bit depressed.
Recently bought a 2004 A4 1.8T Cabriolet multitronic.
It's done 60,000 miles and drives like a dream, no problems yet. Service history is present, and it's got the 'additional' 40k servivce box ticked in the book, hopefully meaning it had the ATF changed - if that actually helps.
Anyway this is my first 'prestige' car and I really didn't expect to discover a thread like this. Audi has always been a name synominous with quality for me.
I'm just wondering whether anyone had actually had a GOOD experience with this box? There are so many complaints that it would seem this is a serious fault with the hardware that Audi shoud be recalling/held responsible for. Amazing what people are putting up with.
I've bought this car because me and the missus want to travel; weekends away and a jaunt around europe next year, in a reliable car. But now I'm sh***ing it that I've bought a posh motor that's going to break and give me a lot of expense and grief.
Not a nice introduction to Audi ownership.
I had a 1995 Corsa 1.4 before this and had no problems with it at all!
Anyway, does anyone have my engine/box combination that is actually happy with their car?

Well yes that would seem to be true going on the amount of bad reports in this thread. I'm just wondering whether for every owner having multitronic issues, perhaps there is one that isn't?I've taken an AA 'Prestige' warranty out on mine now, it clearly staes that it covers ECU faults and CVT failure. They'd probably try to wriggle out of it anyway I suppose but it's given me a little more piece of mind.
Expense aside, it's the possibility of breaking down somewhere where it's hard to get help that's bothering me.
All this has really taken the shine off my new acquisition
