I collected mine today and met fellow PHer, w8pmc at the same time.

I was positively surprised that after recent MMI software update I can finally share internet from my Android phone and don't need SIM card for Audi Connect or traffic. No need to use pre-paid card any more. Also can read SMS on the screen, finally. Maps are already one version behind, as there's ver 6.25.3 out now and I have ver 6.24.2. Car was produced in May and sat somewhere until July and then at dealership since then.

I moved from S8 2015 to A8 3.0 Black Edition and here are my initial comments after driving 300 miles, mostly in rain.

From the options I lost and can immediately notice:
-260 horses - well, it's a diesel and it has half the power of S8, it's good enough for motorway but a bit noisy in town, it also seems to suffer from small power delivery delay, have to work it a bit harder than petrol. I probably alerted all neighbours when parking a bit uphill.
-Alcantara package - standard headliner is not as nice and smells awfully. I plan to leave the car in a garage with open windows, to get rid of that smell. It irritated my eyes. It could be some chemical stuff applied by dealer as part of body care package. No smell of nice new leather.
-Extended Leather on doors and dash - it's not very visible difference if you didn't have it before
-Audi parking system advanced with top view - standard rear camera is flat and gathers water drops which means I couldn't exactly see my driveway after driving in rain, never had this problem with 360 camera.
-Comfort seats - can't find right position in sport seats. Probably need more time to adjust them properly.

Also found a fault with rear windscreen, glass is distorted in lower part which can be immediately noticed as some cars look wider than they are and road lines get distorted. I don't think pursuing it with Audi bring anything useful, so will have to live with that.

21 inch wheels are ok, don' think they are noisier than 20 inch wheels from S8. They are quieter on concrete part of M25.

I'm sure I get used to the car and forget about options and power lost. I still have AMG to play with :-)

P.S. I didn't get Audi umbrella!

Good to meet you yesterday & i hope the drive back South was ok?

I didn't fall in love with mine straight away as like you was coming from a much quicker, more modern & better equipped car, however for the journeys i needed it for i've started to gel with the A8 & enjoy the more relaxed driving approach. I think the various drive modes take little time to learn what's required of them as Auto & Dynamic felt really weird on day one & Auto was a very firm ride, but now it's softened up & a real pleasure on the motorway.

Just keep in the back of your mind how much it's costing & the little frustrations & exclusions soon vanishsmile

I know why 21 inch wheels are quieter than my previous 20 inch on S8. Apparently these are Conti Silent tyres with special coating inside to absorb the noise. Someone pointed it out to me on another forum. British brochure doesn't mention it, but in different countries there's extra wording. Spec from VIN is showing it as well: "Q66 Tires 275/35 R21 103Y XL (torus absorber)"

https://www.continental-tyres.co.uk/car/media-serv...

Never knew that & agree they are very quiet.

Just off outside to check what tyres are on mine. Any way to distinguish if they're Conti Silent as apposed to any other Conti tyre?

Edited to say having checked, they've got RO1 (Audi Spec) & Conti-Silent written on them so all good.

Here's the update on my car.

I pursued distorted rear windscreen with Crawley Audi. Technician said he doesn't know if it's normal or not and we have to go for a test drive and then compare to another A8. Their demo had similar issue but not as bad. So my car was deemed normal. There was also chat how S8 must have different rear windscreen and that's why I didn't have this issue. I checked and part numbers are not relevant to models but to equipment (tinted glass, etc). Went to another dealership and drove 2015 car and it didn't have this problem. Decided to wait for my ex-S8 to surface on a market and give it a test drive if it's in decent distance. However I doubt I wouldn't notice distorted view in the rear view mirror for 2 years, so the glass must have been ok.

In the meantime some rattle started coming from driver's door but it was intermittent. Was told to record it which I thought would be tricky but next day it started to rattle from start of the engine. Then, when I was driving in Belgium on really bad road, the same noise came from the other door. It was fixed under warranty and so far didn't come back.

Got rid off the bad interior smell thanks to baking soda tip from internet.

Regarding MMI and remote sim profile, now I think it probably worked in my previous car but I never configured it properly. I put SIM card straight away when internet from the phone didn't work and never investigated it.

In the meantime had a call from Audi Driveline to activate assistance and was also told that I have account manager at VWFS who will contact me within 3 weeks. Not sure if I was black listed or deemed difficult client by Audi or it's just new service. I complained to Audi UK when Audi Epsom refused to book me for warranty repair to investigate rear windscreen. They sent me to supplying dealer. Audi UK called me twice about it but dealer never bothered to apologise. Not that it mattered, I'm not going to bother to give them my business and they can't offer me anything for free anyway.

I only did 1400 miles in a month, 1000 of them on weekend in Germany and so far car is just decoration on a driveway. Looking for reasons to drive somewhere :-)

I'm glad I took the deal, I didn't see any other good offers on A6 Allroad or A8 since July. I looked at D5 configurator on Audi website and it seems to be poverty spec comparing to Black Edition. There are some electronic gadgets thrown in for free like HUD but they are not very important to me.

That's how the padding of the tyre looks in real life https://postimg.org/image/k9j87lxhh/ Hopefully picture won't disappear too soon, as it's not mine.

That's frustratingfrown

Still very happy with mine & no issues to report & the rear windscreen looks just as i'd expect & no different to any other car.

Not getting exclusive use now the Golf R's arrived as i want to get a few miles on that over the coming weeks & it is as expected a good giggle to drive. Think for now the both cars are a perfect mix of Fun & Luxury motoring.

Glad you're both still enjoying the A8. I've covered 4800 miles in my now & am still very pleased with it. I leave mine 95% of the time in Auto on the Drive Select & have yet to feel that doesn't cover every base. Every now & again i select Dynamic & that's usually quite a giggle.

Agreed on the rear camera, clearly a bad design as with all the crap on the roads right now, it becomes fairly useless very quickly.

The only thing i feel a little frustrated with is the Tech, as although my previous D4 about 6yrs ago felt perfectly up to date, it now feels very old & more so when i jump in the Golf R with Adaptive Cruise, Apple CarPlay & a far more modern touchscreen Satnav, but nice to be able to swap between the 2 cars.

That new A8 has really grabbed my attention, so very possible i'll see if my local dealer fancies entertaining a deal when they arrive in showrooms.

I've got invitation for a test drive and small new A8 brochure from local dealer. I guess they are targeting all A8 drivers they have on their list. I'm not going to bother any time soon. I'm happy with old tech and buttons in current car. I don't think I can go for another A8, life is too short and there's too many car models out there. I will see how market looks in 18 months and what's on offer.

My old S8 is still for sale, now second cheapest on Autotrader. I'm glad I never entertained buying it from VWFS at £42K, as it's on the market for £37.5K now. It's a bit sad that such a good car is not selling well. I guess potential costs of repairs after warranty might be discouraging buyers.
When are they arriving into dealerships? I've had no invitation, but would happily wander in uninvitedsmile
