Car was purchased 28 days ago. Fault was noticed and reported to the garage 15 days after purchase.
I think SoGA should certainly cover you, BUT: Have you authorised Swindon Audi to do the repair? If so, you *may* have a problem, because your claim is initially against the dealer who sold you the car: You can ask them for refund, repair or replacement, but I think you can't just hand them a bill for the costs of repairs done by someone else.
IANAL, so possibly worth spending £100 with a solicitor...
An update for those of you who care...
Swindon Audi are paying for all the parts and are reducing labour costs by 70%. I have spoken to the garage we purchased the car from and now have it in writing that they will cover the remaining £1400.
The car goes in for the surgery in the frist week of september. The only issue that may arise is if the bores are scored.

Update.
Swindon Audi have replaced the pistons and con rods on the car.
The bores showed no sign of scoring damage.
Total bill is over £5k, but Audi have paid 100% of the parts and 75% of the labour costs. I found the remaining 25% from teh garage we bought the car from.
Going to collect the car tomorrow. The parts come with 2 year warranty and the labout a year.
Fingers crossed all is well.

Good point Faxo.
My father in law has the car back. It was given back to him with the MMI indicator showing one segment less than full on hte oil indicator.
He topped it up and has driven a few hundred miles. Checked again yesterday and its dropped by one segment.
I have just written to Swindon Audi and informed them.
The car will be doing a 300 mile journey today - so lets see how much oil it uses.

This is a design fault with that particular engine. Although Audi will not admit it. Probably as the same engine is in VW, Seat, Skoda. Nightmare scenario for VW group. my son had the same problem and after much negotiating with Audi UK and the local dealer had it fixed for £370. However he is so fed up with Audi UK in particular that he will not buy another Audi when it comes up for replacement. This is his 3rd & probably last Audi. He even tried to contact their CEO in Milton Keynes to no avail. Poor show by Audi. I have an A3 Sportback & am considering another make when due to replace next year pure and simply the way that Audi UK treated my son. Give them hell!!! Some dealers have repaired FoC, but there is no guarantee.
Did you really mean £370? If so what did they do to correct it?
I have been a long term fan of Audi - but this expereince has tainted my view of them.
I have a A4 and A6 myself and when the A4 comes up for replacement, I will be looking around for suitable replacement. The problem is that two or three manufacturers have cornered the market.
As for my father in laws car - after the repair he has reported back that it has consumed 0.5 litre of oil in 800 miles. Well within specification for this engine now - but I cant understand how that can be acceptable? I have a A4 tdi and i have never topped up between services and the car does at least 12k miles / year.

Hi Ray. Yes. After much & I do mean much negotiating he managed to get Reading Audi to do the co,Pete engine rebuild for £370. Originally, he was quoted £5500. It even got to the stage at one pint that he sat himself in Reading Audi for the whole day and refused to leave until the repair was agreed. He did lots of research and found out that some dealers were fixing it free of charge. It also seems that there is an ongoing lawsuit in USA between an owner & Audi. The thing that really annoyed him was Audi UK complete lack of response initially despises e:mails and written correspondence after writing to CEO. Even Reading Audi were arguing with them at one stage about contributing to the cost of repair. We have both been told unofficially that this is a design problem with that particular engine for models between 2009-2011.
We have both been Audi owners/fans for years. However his experience has seriously tainted that view.

Has there been any change in the consumption since then? Holy thread resurrection batman, etc....
Following on from the repair work conducted by Swindon Audi. My father in Law has noticed that after a couple of years of trouble free motoring his car has started to consume oil again at an alarming rate.
His estimate is that it is going through approx. 1 litre of oil every 1000 miles, so this would fall within the specification Audi use to 'deflect' this problem. But my question is that after new pistons and con rods, should the car have a drinking habit again and so soon?
We have informed Audi Swindon and the car is booked in for an oil consumption test in the second week in June.
As an Audi fan boy for many years (mainly with the sturdy older Audi A4 B5 and B6 models) I am loosing my passion for the newer cars.

That doesn't sound good. How many miles has he done since the original fix? - and, did they actually replace pistons and rods at that point? Sometimes Audi attempted a fix by changing the engine breathing system but I never heard of that actually working for anyone It's possible (but unlikely) that this is a different problem entirely. Usually it took around 4 years/50K miles before the oil consumption became an issue.
Good luck, anyway
