Glad you are ok.
Fibble do share your gap experience?
There's a bit about it in GG, but the short version is I sent them paperwork after my motor insurer paid out, it took a couple of weeks to get sorted, but they sent me a cheque for the difference between invoice price and settlement. Pretty much exactly how it's meant to work. I'd be out of pocket to the tune of five figures had I not taken the policy (which cost a couple of hundred quid).Fibble do share your gap experience?
I have GAP on my S3, but all the entire concept does is actually annoy me - what am I paying insurance for if I also need GAP? Insurance on the insurance?
I know I am being simplistic here, but if I am fully comp and have [for example] a £200 excess, then if my car is a complete write off, I would expect my regular insurance policy to pay the correct amount to put me back in a 2015 S3 of same/similar spec to mine, less £200.
That's what I am paying insurance for??
I understand that GAP then would put me in a 2016 (for the sake of rounding up) brand new one, but the reality seems to be more like GAP is needed to make up the shortfall in the above scenario.
If the OP would have been "five figures" out of pocket, is that the difference between your old car and a showroom fresh version or is that the difference between the offer amount and the amount to replace your car like-for-like? If it's the latter, then I would suggest finding a different insurer!
As an aside - your experience as nasty as it is, makes me a lot more confident in knowing that I carry my own family around in the S3. Every cloud...etc.

It was the difference between my old car (some 18 months old, and on a fair few miles) and showroom fresh. The difference between the settlement and a like-for-like would have been a couple of thousand probably (I didn't argue the settlement as the gap insurance company were happy with it).Flibble said:

Just an update;
AlA gap paid out in full, a five figure sum. Took alittle time but we got there in the end. I wouldn't run a car without it.
My accident was non fault, but I think a dash cam is way to go.
Police are considering prosecuting the other driver.
What to get next, the delemma begins...
MY16 S3
F Pace
or wait till 2017 for the new SQ5?

S3 saloon easily would be my choice
SQ5 is a nice car for soccer mums :-) Do sound lovely though. One came rumbling past where I used to work, I looked up expecting a mustang!

Bit of a late reply this one, but gap insurance's primary purpose as I understand it is to cover you for the difference between the value of your car at the time of write off compared to the amount of finance outstanding, which can sometimes be higher depending where on the depreciation curve it is. I know I am being simplistic here, but if I am fully comp and have [for example] a £200 excess, then if my car is a complete write off, I would expect my regular insurance policy to pay the correct amount to put me back in a 2015 S3 of same/similar spec to mine, less £200.

Your main insurance policy should give you the current (pre crash) market value of the car. Gap spans the difference, if there is one.
