Just a thought, what sort of performance would that engine/trans produce in something like an Ultima?

Would be great if they stuck it in the A4/A6 Avant so it was actually usefull!

Astonishing stuff this engine technology, in not many years Diesels will be the engine of choice from Numpty mobile to autobahn stormer.

I'll vouch for the soundtrack of V10 Tdi

I wonder what that'd be like in a TVR???

Has anyone made a diesel that'll rev properly yet?

The ones i've come across hit brick wall at about 5k....

The Touareg V10 makes 308 bhp, somewhat shy of this Audi.

Also, the Audi Germany press site claims "strongest diesel engine for a sedan in the world" - suitably qualified I reckon...

1600 bar fuel pressure - is that correct ?

Thats standard for common rail systems, some of the newer systems are running upto 2500bar.

fooooook 2500bar is about 36800psi!!!!! how on earth do you control an injector at those pressures?

Yeah, well I'd still prefer a low-down torquey engine to a peaky dyno queen. Think big-capacity Yank V8 (uncivilised yes, but it gets the job done) versus Honda VTEC four pot (yes i know the S2000 has the best atmo hp per litre rating, but it still lacks any useable low rev power). I know which one I'd take in a daily driver situation. Plus diesels are nice and frugal.

Not that difficult really.....in a nutshell you channel the fuel at that pressure to both 'ends' of the valve, so when the current opens the injector, it's not trying to fight against the pressure, and you can control them very accurately (hence the pre and post injection pulses to quieten the diesel 'knock').

In order to ensure a tight 'grip' on the injector, the voltage is (in some systems) upped to 100 or so volts at smaller currents (as oppose to 12 volts at higher currents).

The problem with trying to rev a diesel above 5k is that it (diesel) won't burn quickly enough, so you can't.....

They were messing about with diesels with methanol injection to try and increase the speed of the burn, but that's all gone a bit quiet (emissions?).

I reckon this is why, although good for torque, I don't think they will better petrol engines for the rev. happy amongst us.....

My Revo'd Ibiza cupra trails off at about 6000, but by this time it is smoking like a chimney.

Err, Gallardo anyone . . .

No serious. The nature of an engine like this is so far away from sport that it would be an insult to drop one in a car like that. It'll suit an A8 just fine.

I drove the old car and it was hardly any more economic than the petrol. More importantly it was 25% off Audi's combined mpg figure on A/B roads.

I'm sure it's brilliant.

But for 60 grand I want something that I don't have to spend more than 2 seconds picking out in a car park full of silver Mondeos and BMs.
