I have a similar dilemma.....I run around in a 50k mile 2000 B5 S4.....I have known the car since new.....it performs well enough....to get a decent similar mileage B5 Rs4 I would need to spend another £15k.....I am not convinced it is worth the expense, I may end up getting the S4 mapped where it will retain it's Q car image.
Put it this way if I was starting my Audi runabout purcasing from scratch...I would have bought the RS4....right now can't part with S4 ...it's all good

Completely different cars.....not too much you can do to tune a B6 S4,,,sounds great with a decent exhaust, RS4 has more punch and tuning potential.....plus limited numbers of RS4 means depreciation curve should be much slower than that of later S4
drive both to see what suits,,,,put it this way i might replace my B5 S4 with an Rs4...a B6 S4 is not even a consideration.

I have been reading this thread and had a thought, What would be a better buy, an B5 RS4 (approx £20k) or an B7 S4 the V8 one (approx £20k)?
You might get a B6 S4 for £20,000 but not a B7.I think shollis is getting the B6 and B5 confused. The 2.7TT (B5) now start from around £8k and the "V8 one" does indeed start at £20k but that is the B6 as you point out FJ, so you are both kind of right.
I drove my favourite road this week for the first time in the RS4, its 10 miles long in wales & I would have to say, driving ability aside It would have taken an exceptionally quick car to do it any faster than the RS4, it utterly took my breath away and has completely renewed my enthusiasm. I knocked a good couple of mins off my previous record time.

My apologuies, I did mean the B6 not the B7.
It was just thought I had as the V8 cant be far off the pace of the B5 RS4 and has the advantage of being a newer car. Admitidly looks wise the RS4 wins hands down but the V8 does sound better!

Time around the Nurburgring
7:58 --- 156.652 km/h -- Audi RS4 4.2 V8 FSI, 420 PS/ 1650 kg, Frank Stippler, (10/05)(B7)
8:20 --- 148.320 km/h -- Audi RS6, 400 PS/ 1815 kg (sport auto 03/01)
8:25 --- 146.851 km/h -- Audi RS4, 375 PS/1675 kg (sport auto 10/00)(B5)
8:29 --- 145.697 km/h -- Audi S4 4.2 Avant, 344 PS/1826 kg (sport auto 11/03)(B6)
With only 31 seconds between them all over 14 miles, driver, track, weather, temp all make a difference.

If it were a choice between these 2.

I'd have to take the B6 S4 (which I bought new) It will have done a lot less miles, be newer, it has no turbo's to go wrong and no expensive cambelt changes. But if you have a bee in your bonnet about having an "R" infront of your "S" then I guess you have to pay for it.
That is my view too. The S4, like the S2 and S6, become performance bargains as they get over shadowed by the 'R' version. When I am in the situation to need an A4 sized car, the V8 S4 will be top of my list.
I will have to sort out my diary in the new year and come along to an Oakerthorpe meeting to come and have a look at yours!
