RE: Base A5 Gets More Power
Discussion
Oh come on.
It' a 2 door Audi A4 for gawd's sake.
Profit margins must be massive for such a cut and paste car. Good for Audi, but I really, really don't get it.
The S5 is an Ok car with a lovely engine, but the regular A5 has no apparent qualities that would ever make me want to own one.
It is easy to spend well over £35,000 on a pretty standard A5. Throw in the cost of finance and it's well into the £40 k's.
Why on earth spend so much on something so, well, mundane?
Think of the other things you send sink £40,000 into !
Granted there are a fair few around. I therefore see huge depreciation coming this way......

With torque figures (and fuel economy) similar to a diesel, this and the new ~210bhp version seem to make VAG's 2.0 diesels redundant.
But the 1.8 seems to have only just come out itself!
And isn't this now obsolete 1.8 just about to become available in the TT?
(A bit like the obsolete 2.0 from the Golf GTI is about to be launched in the Scirocco - the main thing that puts me off it.)

Thank god this hasn't turned into a "Lets go on about how bland Audi's are" forum. It makes me laugh Reading the Latest MTM RS6 thread and people moaning on about how bland it is? I simply don't see it, I think it and most other Audi's for that matter have always had an understated look of class which is exactly what I would want in a car,
Great news about the A5 also, great looking motor in my opinion, I'd take one over a 3 series coupe or CLK...

Your eye sight must be bad if all you see is a 2 door A5 granted the rear does have a resemblance but looking at the front and from the side no way It' a 2 door Audi A4 for gawd's sake.

I test drove an Audi S5 and a A5 3.0 TDI today with a view to replacing my 7 Series with one. I think its one of the best looking/designed cars that is currently on the market today, i think the LED's on the front look superb and nothing close to resembling 'chavy', in fact i think its a classy touch. The interior is one of the best i have seen from a premium German Car maker. Build quality and layout of the cabin is very good and in the short time i used it, i found the Nav/radio etc system far more logical and easy to use than the BMW effort.
The S5 is a better looking car than the A5, the added S bits make it more aggresive and it stands out a bit more to make it look a bit more special. I don't however believe in terms of performance and handling that its worth the extra ££ over the standard A5 variant. Having read a lot about the S5's fuel consumption on these pages its a perfect example that if you used your head the A5 is really your only option. It makes much more sense, every way you look at it. The S5 is purely a heart decision wich doesn't warrant the price premium or running costs.
Both are fantastic to drive, neither are that exciting to drive, but they are both deceptively quick cars that in the real world are near on perfect driving machines. Sure they are not going to excite you on a track, but thats not what they are built for, you want excitement, wait for the RS5 which will obviously be massively expensive and need to re-fuel every 1 or 2 laps.
I always find it odd when people criticise cars for irrelevant reasons. What i mean by that is that the A5/S5 are not built for excitment or track prowess, so why critique them in this manner?
I've had a 5 Series, a 7 Series and am now looking at either an early Maserati Quattroporte or the Audi A5 3.0 TDI. Running costs, insurance etc is important for me and after my test drive of the A5 today, i prefer it by quite a distance to my former BMW's and would be delighted to have one sat on the drive. I think its a wonderful car thats fits what i want from a car perfectly.
Just need to get myself in a Maser before decision time.
Thanks
James

It's a cruiser at the end of the day if you want an exciting or sporty drive look elsewhere but it would be a good car to cover long distances in.
Your right enough about the diesel being the one to go for.
I have the 3.0TDI model. Having come from a Cayenne Turbo, this gives me some relief and has reduced my costs.
I just loved the design and to call it mundane, I think is a little unfair..
As a cruiser this car is superb. I have a young family who fit into the back seats perfectly... Very quick, comfortable and just eats the miles...
I am very happy with it..
