I've sorted a drive in both on my own for half a day each over the weekend! Hope this helps!
Ive been told by alot of people not to touch the R32 due to the updated car tax in Sept...as the good old government are screwing big engines and high co2 output (even more)...?
Thing is, in the short term, the differences won't be enormous (I'm guessing the Audi is next band down) and the MPG can't be too far removed in the real world so are you that sensitive to it all? Real world it's likely to be a few hundred a year difference and better to go with what you want rather than a money saver. We're all going to hell in a handcart anyway as long as the current government is in charge.Ive been told by alot of people not to touch the R32 due to the updated car tax in Sept...as the good old government are screwing big engines and high co2 output (even more)...?
The depreciation argument might be a slightly different argument but then again if you work on real English pounds and not percentages and are prepared to go lightly used rather than new, then I wouldn't mind betting that there is little or nothing in it. I would hazard a guess that if you trade in for a same brand in the future then the Audi dealers want more margin and are less willing on discounts than their VW equivalents, so swings & roundabouts in some respects.
My own view would be that unless you are dead set on the running cost element and/or you want to re-map, and/or you think the looks/interior quality of the S3 are worth the additional pennies, then a lightly used R32 @ around £20k ish would be 98%+ of the fun of the S3 and anywhere between £7-£10k cheaper. I suspect that would fund any monetary element and so it just comes down to personal preference.
Even better, how about @ £16k of 2 yr old R32 (or, if you don't hate the looks and aren't that bothered about 4wd, the BM 130i @ 1 yr old). Best option to me by a distance, apart from flash extra cash and go up a level or two

What a mad Saturday I had!
Ok...drove both cars for a good few hours each. The R32 is a better drive! And with that amazing sound...I was sold! So went to talk to the guys, and they HAVE STOPPED MAKING THE R32! Its now discontinued!!! As a new mk6 golf is on its way and VW/Audi have stopped production of the 3.2 V6 as it’s not within current environmental issues that the brand want!
The new top of the range mk6 golf (to replace the R32) will have the EXACT engine as the Audi S3!!
This put me right off! I obviously didn’t want to buy a car, where its value will disappear over the next 12 months!
Audi S3….S*it me it’s quick! So im going to order the new face lifted S3, with the new LED day running headlamps, updated rear light cluster, magnetic suspension as the new TT and new pronounced front. Should be out in Nov/Dec on a 09 plate!

A well specced S3 is low 30's dependant on options, you must be mad

and by the 09 plate they will have dropped enough to be cheaper than what you are about to spend, you'd get all the good bits of both, infact you get considerably better than the good bits of both.

I'm going to go for the 09 plate S3 in white! I'll get this for under £26k
It's easy to hit £32-£34K with options all of which are already on those second hand RS4's I linked to, sat nav', seats, parking sensors, phone, tv, magnetic ride etc etc. If you're under £26k you're doing very well as the OTR of the base car is nearly £28KYeah on the road its £27,200 with out even trying to bargin! they have offered £26,000 inc any paint option, so theres another £500 off!
I think im going to have to go for the bucket seats! There £1900!!!! So hopfully, when i sit there with my wallet out! I can get these for half price!

Where can a 2 yr old R32 be had for £16K? And the 130i ? The R32 is an Aug '06 @ White Rose VW and is £17k (I must have read it wrong) but I would guess in the current climate there may be enough movement on that to get down to £16.5k or less.
Just a couple I happen to have seen as I've been looking around for a new motor myself and want to keep under £20k - the further the better!

Fact that they stop making it doesn't necessarily mean values disintegrate - the things have quite a cult following. However, like you, I would still go for the S3!
lot of sense being talked here
imho as someone who has owned both a Mk V R32 and B7 RS4 in the last 2 years buy the R32 and put away the extra pennies towards the RS4 you'll no doubt be buying next - that is a proper fast audi rather than a 4 pot on steroids
the mk v will be the last v6 golf (think cult following), and if you buy now at the right price you'll lose a hell of a lot less cash than buying a new s3, and the running costs will be virtually the same when you take into account higher audi servicing and parts costs
