not 100% sure its a dog guard but its a pull up guard stops any stuff from the back flying forward, ie allows you to cram in more.

OK, that makes sense. Good for trips to Ikea!

trying to think of kid orientated things to look for, and it probably will not matter if you have little kids, its is NOT roomy in the back. my nine year old struggles for leg room.

S4 interiors i am not sure, mine is a leather/alcanthra, very comfy, the alcanthra bit is nice comfy but sticky sweeties are the kiss of death for it. Spent a whole day removing a fruit pastel from the back seat. Wonder synthetic material by a royal PITA to clean.

if you arent going for an S4 make sure you pick a well specc'ed one as the option list can be really long. And some can make a real difference.

I tried a 3.0 avant quattro sport and a 2.5tdi quattro sport last year and settled on the tdi as my green head figured we needed something that does more than 30mpg in the fleet. if it was the same choice again... I might have gone for the petrol. The 3.0tdi in the higher level of tune (233bhp i recall) is a nice drive as well and deceptively quick point to point with reasonable economy. They were out of my price bracket at the time. S/RS is/was/shall be on my want list but when my ration self kicks in it gets ruled out.

Happy shopping! its the best part.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have leather/alcantara in my current car and I love it but I can see how it might be a pain to clean. Was thinking of either full leather or some kind of protective mats in the back.

I also liked the look of the 3.0tdi but they are min 15k and I don't do enough miles to make the difference in mpg worth it.

The rear leg room is cramped but luckily myself and MrsTwo are sufficiently vertically challenged that it should be enough.
