The Golf R lease thread
Discussion
Anyone else find the steering wheel oddly hard and plasticky feeling? Very odd - I guess I'll get used to it.
CD player only seems to take one CD at a time too, which seems a bit odd as both my previous cars had 6 CD changers, but maybe I'm just old fashioned in even wanting to use CDs

I agree on the steering wheel, coming from an XJ the leather on the wheel feels a bit low rent, but this is a Golf, not a Phaeton I suppose.
As for CDs, I haven't worked out half of the stuff on the centre console yet, it plays R4 and R6 and sometimes through some sort of witchcraft my phone plays music through it too - but that's about it for me.
I keep thinking I should probably set up a load of personalisations, including the 'Indvidual' driving mode but that would entail sitting in the car on the drive with a manual which I haven't the patience for.

I guess vw have to cut costs somewhere.
Although my astra steering wheel actually has a nice feel to it - a little bit squishy as well. I have never put any cleaning stuff on it.
Was a bit worried as I haven't actually driven a golf r - so this is completely out of my comfort zone. But the way I look at it - its a 2 year lease - if I don't like it (I very much doubt it) then once the two years is up get something else.
Although I do think this will be my last hot hatch / hot estate. I guess that's partly the problem in living in the south east, puts a bit of a dampener on driving - but am looking forward to driving it at my sisters in Lincolnshire and also in Cornwall!

I used the CD player in our R Estate for the first time on Saturday. The drive slot is hidden away in the glovebox.
I saw a deal on the facelift DSG hatch from Motorleasedirect last week. Not sure if it's any good but it was a £2500 deposit plus 23 months at £200 inc vat for 10k miles.
If you want photos this is mine. It's not an estate, it's not a facelift and it's not on lease so some people have moaned about me posting photos but here it is:
Recently had the wheels done in gloss black but I'm having second thoughts.

That car is very black! Motorleasedirect was only formed in May of this year and as has been said before on this thread, looks dodgy so probably best to give it a swerve. If you want photos this is mine. On a positive note, my FL R is now in the UK and should have it by the end of next week! Yay!

Yeah, found it, but it only seems to take a single CD at a time, rather than being a jukebox.I used the CD player in our R Estate for the first time on Saturday. The drive slot is hidden away in the glovebox.
After experimenting with an old SD Card, I've just ordered up a couple of 64GB ones to hold my MP3 collection.
Re the steering wheel - It feels low rent compared to my old Mazda RX8, let alone a Jaguar!
My wife moaned about the manual seat slider too (Mazda's driver seat one was electric), but that's a first world problem if I ever heard one and the drawer under the seat makes up for it, imo.
I'm quibbling really, the electronic dash is great, seats are comfy (Especially now I've found the height adjuster), it looks like it'll swallow all my dive gear with room to spare and it goes pretty well! It doesn't feel like you're driving anything bigger than a hatchback to be honest (well a modern one, it does feel a bit big next to the RX8).
I'm also loving the novelty of seeing a range on the dash and it being over 400 miles! My Mazda rarely managed much more than 200 with local driving and 250 on a mixed run, it was the one thing I really didn't like about it (I could cope with the consumption, it was that combined with a tiny tank that really annoyed me!).

There's a drawer under the seat? Well there's another thing I didn't know.
I once had an S2000 for 2 years and didn't find a cubby between the seats until the day I was clearing it out to sell.
Both front seats!I once had an S2000 for 2 years and didn't find a cubby between the seats until the day I was clearing it out to sell.
I had a DS5 rental car recently and stuck my hotel keys in the central cubby. When I opened it at the end of the day, they were gone!!!
Turned out there were two, a shallow and a deep one beneath it operated by a split catch on the lid!
Had me worried for a few moments though!

Mine arrived this morning. Only driven it 4 miles but it is certainly nice being back in petrol.
When they guy dropped it off it had 37.8 mpg, we sat on the drive and he showed me some of the different bits and bobs - so mpg went down to 37.6 - sounds quite nice if you flick it to sport mode on the dsg, revs a bit higher approx 1100 rpm instead of 800 ish rpm when at a standstill. Although if I'm honest I will probably never use that unless on my own and thats not very often.
Dislikes - well not had much chance yet to drive it - but the volume nob with the standby emblem - I hate the fact the standby doesn't stay still it twists with the volume - so can be upside down for example, which is doing my head in.
Seems smaller than I thought as well - doesn't seem lots of room in the back which as all reviews say its spacious it doesn't seem as spacious as my 11 plate astra - maybe my seat needs to be adjusted a bit.
Considering I didn't test drive one - its partly my own fault - but it is only 2 years - I guess a octavia will be next for me with a bit more room for my daughter.

The knob can stay where it is - and the volume can be put up or down via the steering wheel controls.
