Did they send you the final finance forms before your car arrived at the dealership? Mine arrived today but I've not had anything emailed through yet.
I received some forms I have to sign and send it take in along with my driving licence and a bill. Is that what you mean or some other forms?

Yes VW Crewe. I'm happy with the whole process from them.
It was driven down, only 80 miles away. Like you that doesn't bother me at all. In 2 years time it will be over 30,000.

No, on arrival. But I posted the finance docs back the same day, arrived the day after, then the car delivered 3 working days later. So it's all very quick and efficient once the car is in the dealer.

Thats not too bad. I sold my car last weekend so am hoping they can get it to me by Saturday. This may be wishful thinking though.

The MPG does improve a little over time on these. My GTD with the same engine could only manage mid-late 40s when I got it last year but now with 20k miles it does early 50s with ease.
The difference will be the new software which doesn't cheat the emissions test wink

One thing I am surprised at is no powered boot closing mind, would've thought that would be standard ?
They're a gimmick unless you have a medical need - they close so slowly they're annoying. And, while not an issue on a lease, they're notorious for being problematical as the car gets older - takes a lot of effort for a little motor to open and close the boot.

Mate of mine has a Cyprus spec golf and his was missing he Apple use port. You can buy the plug in module that goes in the back of the usb unit for about 20 quid
Do you have any details of that, please? I've had a bit of a Google and can't see anything.

I wonder what turns a USB port into an Apple USB port?

Time to flick through the 500 page manual. Does anyone actually read it all cover to cover?
The online manual is quite handy if you think of something while away from the car: http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/manuals

Took a few weeks for it to recognise our reg number so I used one from a similar car.

I think what's being discussed is a "mifi dongle".

I had to go through every reg I found on Auto trader until I found one that worked - not sure if it's bad form to post the reg or not, so it's the most expensive (£30k) 2016 Passat Alltrack I found on autotrader.

No some earlier cars couldn't be retrofitted with app connect because the USB port was the wrong part number, it wasn't apple certified. So you need to replace the USB port before you add the app connect licence.

If I wanted to get carnet activated would Crewe VW have to do before collection or could any local dealer sort it out for me?

I've looked into it but nothing I could find was conclusive whilst at work.

I find it hard to believe that the cars would be fitted with different USB ports depending on whether the head unit was spec'd to include CarPlay already activated or not.

Who knows though - maybe if CarPlay is built-in already it's OK, and it's only on retrofitting that it checks the USB port??

I wonder how an Apple certified USB port differs from any other.

If it's compatible then any dealer can do it. Indeed you can buy the activation key online and (I think) do it yourself. Wonder if it's a one-time only thing? scratchchin

Anything that is marked as "made for iPhone/iPod" has to have a certain chip in it to work with the devices correctly. The module has to have this chip in. The usb unit has the standard module for generic devices and then a 2nd one for iPhones. The chip module can just be plugged into the blank port on the back of the USb unit. If you get app connect activated and your car doesn't have the module then android auto still works.

I believe though that most uk spec cars have the apple module and just need app connect activated

Thank you, I'll get a quote from Crewe and if anyone's interested I'll post it on here. Sent forms back today with POA and apparently all being well should expect delivery down to Cornwall on Tuesday. Tempted to go up and collect it instead if I could get it Friday/Saturday.

I've been waiting for VW Crewe to tell me how much to activate the App-connect, couple of days ago the salesman said he was still chasing, so if you get an answer please let us know.

I also asked about picking it up - I think it has to be a weekday as you're dealing with the fleet guys, so a Friday should be fine - just send them an email and ask. If you drive it back to Cornwall, isn't that like half of your 5000 annual miles gone? wink

Haha I was under the impression that delivery mileage came out of my allowance anyway? I'll keep you posted if I get anywhere with the app-connect.

Crewe to Penzance is ~£20 in excess mileage.
I'd still sleep well at night if I ended up absorbing that cost myself. smile
