If you're looking at a saloon, the sunroof is pretty small in the grand scheme of things. We have one on our S5 Sportback, but wouldn't be bothered if it wasn't there. I probably open it less than a handful of times a year - mainly to stop it seizing up!
The pano roof on the avant is much nicer, although not without it's own risks in terms of repairs

it sure did - but fairly rare option - I'm in similar boat, looking for one with three things: s'roof / 19's / carbon trim - nearly impossible!!
Also your date range of 08-10 does bridge two platforms, the B7 S4 (4.2 V8 up to 2008 i think?) and the newer model B8 (3.0 V6 from 09 to 2016)
As a side note - there does seem to be a few people looking to make a move to a B8 S4 this year from my exhaustive surfing of audi sites etc,
any potential buyers here got any thoughts on re-sale value when their done, as in 3/4yrs down the line - will there be any re-sale value in the car given how the market environment will likely be vastly different and perhaps less(or completely not?!) enthused towards bigger ICE vehicles.
Are we buying these cars knowing it's a shot to nothing?

I have a March 2010 B8 convertible.
Is there a way I can check if I have the chocolate gearbox or the later, stronger one?
Fancy taking a trip to MRC but only if the gearbox will take it...
There's no physical difference in the gearboxes - it's the addition of a 2nd oil filter with a replaceable element that changes. Is there a way I can check if I have the chocolate gearbox or the later, stronger one?

If the car had a box earlier in its life, it will have had the revised setup. I believe our S5 Sportback got the revised box throughout production from 2010, but not sure if the same applies to the convertible. You may find information in the service history invoices for a gearbox oil change if it lists the filter as a part. Quite often though, dealers don't differentiate and just tick whatever box suits to generate the correct cost on the invoice (so it might list a filter, even if one wasn't changed)
If the box works correctly now and has been serviced as it should, there's no reason to assume it will result in an earlier failure due to a remap (noting MRC will remap the box too). It all depends on how aggressive you are/intend to be with the box? I've never used launch control in ours.....
Main dealer or TPS should be able to confirm whether your VIN has a gearbox oil filter listed as a part.

My Avant has the panoramic roof and whilst the overall glass area is quite large, the front part that actually opens is probably no bigger than on the saloon. The pano roof on the avant is much nicer, although not without it's own risks in terms of repairs
Overall whilst I quite like it, it was an expensive option that gets used very little plus it gets rather noisy above 60mph so I can see why most don't have it...
Most people like them for light rather than airflow.
Given how many come in here squeaking and juddering (they have a 2 year scheduled service (clean and regrease) that is usually ignored) I think the majority rarely open them!
Either that or it's one of those things the marketing/dealer world have successfully programmed in as essential for resale![wink](/inc/images/wink.gif)

IMO you always have to think 'what is the competition' - and if you want a fast, 4 door practical car its very hard to beat for the money. Interior is ok, B&O stereo is amazing, feels more modern than some rivals to me, plus it still does mid 20's and isn't silly tax bracket. I cannot see it losing a ton of money anytine soon, given it was a £40k+ car and they are now £10k up then even if you had it 3 years and sold for £6k that is still alot of car for the money. Also your date range of 08-10 does bridge two platforms, the B7 S4 (4.2 V8 up to 2008 i think?) and the newer model B8 (3.0 V6 from 09 to 2016)

What will no doubt happen is that the price will bottom out, then ones with sensible miles and in good condition will hold a firm value/start appreciating.
IMO this isn't like buying a v8 in the high tax bracket and doing 18mpg with insane service costs, the engine is v solid and not exactly dated (plenty still offer 3.0-4.0 forced induction engines in their line up). I think people think the car market moves faster than it does, because cars are so expensive it really takes a long time for any drastic change. The only real cars which might struggle are the 540i's and the 745's of this world, long cars which are high tax, low mpg and have a rival which does the same things but better.
Sportback has been in for its second gearbox oil and filter change at 70k miles - decided to have the sports diff and rear diff (both in the back!) oils changed at the same time. The sports diff is a service item on the RS but no interval given for the S
Sports diff needs connecting to ODIS to bleed it properly, and it’s 2 litres of oil, but at £25 a litre.....
£420 in total, but should be good for many more miles![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)

Interesting. Did you get the main dealer to do this? I’m debating whether I can get them to do it when I get my DSG box done, but not sure if they’ll “get” what I’m asking for. Thus might go independent. Sports diff needs connecting to ODIS to bleed it properly, and it’s 2 litres of oil, but at £25 a litre.....

Hiya
Was done by my favoured independent in Crawley - the sports diff itself isn't massively challenging for main dealers, as it's part of the RS service schedule. The oil for the sports diff LSD itself is separate from the rear diff though, and I suspect will get the 'sealed for life' mantra from some for the diff itself.
A good indy should be able to do it, but it does need OTIS access to bleed the sports diff properly.
I gather the oil from the rear diff looked in reasonable shape, but seemed churlish not to do it at the same time for the sake of £50 or so.
For interest, the cost broke down as follows:
Labour:
s-tronic service 0.8 hours £52
rear diff (axle) oil 0.5 hours £32.50
rear sports diff oil change 0.8 hours £52
Parts:
Gearbox oil - 6 litres @ 17.39 a litre £104.34
Gearbox oil filter £13.71
gearbox oil filter seal ring £7.83
Axle oil - 1 litre - £25.51
Sports diff oil - 2 litres - £24.82 a litre £49.64
ODIS access - £20
All prices are +VAT
I don't think there's much competition on the price of s-tronic services between main dealers and indys - the oil and filter is the significant cost

Thanks Adrian, that’s very helpful.
I might see if I can get them quote for the sports diff, like you say, as part of the RS additional work.
I could then leave the rear diff oil, as I’m only on 30k miles on a 2016 plate.
(Getting DSG serviced earlier than recommended for peace of mind as I’ve recently moved to stage 1]
