A work colleague of mine has recently taken delivery of a new 290 dsg hatch. His old car was a 2016 Golf R.

His initial feedback is that it feels like the golf, but he is disappointed with the way the car sounds - it is very quiet compared to the VW. Certainly no dsg thuds like described above. I’ve heard him drive off a few times and I would describe it as near silent to be honest. Strange when other hot hatches come with such overtly loud, poppy exhausts that seat have fitted such a quiet one to their sporty model?

He is already talking about fitting an aftermarket system.

He probably has the engine/gearbox in comfort rather than sport mode.
They're definitely not quiet cars.

I have one of the latest models, but the estate (so 300PS and 4wd).

It makes barely any noise. Quietest car I've owned by a long way. None of the pops and farts you used to get on my previous TTS.

My 300DSG (2017) is fairly loud in Cupra mode. Every now and then I have seats folded down and parcel shelf removed for one reason or another and you definitely hear it then. Makes a huge difference actually.

I've still got 9 months till my lease goes back I can't think of what to get next? Is anyone getting another Cupra or anything caught their eye?

I find that odd. My car is almost embarrassingly loud at low speed. My friend (even on my old 290 BE) always harped on about how my cupra sounded so much "fruitier" than his golf R. And that old car is certainly far quieter than my new one. I've started to get the overrun noises now. It's a lot more prominent than on he old model. The old model was a very high pitched crack, which sounded so overdone sometimes. The new noise is a much deeper burble.

Tell him to turn the car on, change it to cupra mode (if he's already in cupra mode, tell him to change it to comfort then back to cupra), reverse up to a garage or wall. Put the car in P, open his door, take the car to 3k rpm and let off. He should get big pops. If not, he needs to run it in more. On this one and my old one, the noises started coming in around 800-1000 miles. The new cars are far better insulated than the old pre-facelift, so you need to actively listen for the noise inside the cabin. If he wants to hear the thuds, seats down and parcel shelf out to make it easier. Change gear at high RPM, or get someone else to do a drive-by in it for him.

DSG farts are embarrassing anyway. So glad it's gone.

Same, I have a Cupra 300 ST and it's quieter than my Mum's Mokka 1.4 lol. No pops, no bangs, no actual exhaust noise whatsoever. It's limo-silent.

I've also been a passenger in a Cupra 300 hatch, and that was very similar, perhaps a tiny bit more vocal but negligible.

I'm sure part of the issue is that 'loud' to one person is 'quiet' to another...

But people talking about standard cars being 'embarrassingly loud' - I just don't get? Loud compared to what, an EV?! Unless they've made the latest 290 Copra much more vocal than previous versions, but it would appear that isn't the case as they've added an extra filter to the exhaust system?

ST's are quieter.

And loud compared to other 4pot hot hatches like Golf R's. It's not m140i cold-start loud, but it's not worlds apart. And I can assure you it is the case with the new car, I've had both a pre and post facelift. The exhaust tone and loudness is completely different. I'd have to have gone aftermarket to get anywhere near the new cars sound on the pre-FL. At the end of the day, it's still a 4 pot, so you're not going to get the sounds of an M2.

My 300 hatch has been likened to a gun going off when it "bangs" But that is from echoing off walls/ fence I think (makes it sound louder)

It goes back in 7 months and I'm ordering a new one for then. Couldn't find anything that gives as much pound for pound.

The key element here is that people are talking about their old 290's and 300's.

The '19 290 has the new exhaust emissions treatment which has quietened down pretty much every performance car of late. If it hasn't got the bronze badges, it's got the old exhaust and will be louder!

I'm picking mine up in three weeks so will see then.

My loud car is 6 days old and has bronze badges. My 66 plate black edition 290 was far quieter than the new cars. With he new exhaust, the DSG fart is gone and has been replaced by a thud. However, the overrun and general noise of the exhaust is far more audible.

That's reassuring then! Hatch or Estate?

(Wishing I'd gone for blue now too)

Both are hatch. I actually wanted red, but the only had build slots left for blue, grey or silver. What have you gone for?

I found the old 290's exhaust lifeless until 3k rpm to get the overrun. It had no tonality to it, it just got slightly louder with the increase in revs. The new car seems to have a throaty sound, not just a 'flat' tone. The talk about the car being quieter is coming from the DSG farts being gone now.

I recommend unplugging the fake sound speaker. More than happy to record a video of small idle blips to put anybodies mind at ease if they're worried about the new cars being quiet.

I'm in a similar position, 7 months remaining on mine. Although I've not started looking seriously, I get the impression that the leasing deals that were around a few years ago are long gone. I've not had an offer to extend or even know if it would be available, but I'd certainly consider it at similar monthly costs. I'd need to factor in a couple of tyres and a service but if it stacked up would seriously consider it.

With the lack of new lease deals available I've been looking at 2-3 year old similar stuff, 140i, 340i, C43, but not really narrowed it down yet. The one thing that annoys me about the Cupra is the thudding traction issues in lower gears, 300bhp is a lot for a fwd to manage in less than perfect conditions. I suspect whatever comes next will likely either be rwd or 4wd.

Mine goes back in six months and I'm probably going to do a bit of bangernomics for a while... currently keeping my eye on Gumtree for something around £500!

Yep I was thinking the same can't find any tempting deals really, I'm keen on the m140i so may look at used ones later on. I really like the Cupra but just fancy a change

I find my FL 290 very quiet, my brother has a PFL 290 Black which is much louder standard.

It's not an issue and I actually quite like the stealthiness of it.

My car has only done 1100 miles so it may get louder.

On a side not it gets treated to an Oil change (Millers Nanodrive), JB4 and upgraded engine mount next week.

I've just FTK'd on a Cupra Lux from leasing options on a 3+23 10k p/a £284.26 for anyone on the market for one. Estimated delivery mid May.

I was initially quoted £271.79 on the same term and mileage but creeped up slightly due to me wasting time.

Not sure if this deal is still available, but worth ringing them up.
