Well folks my S5 experience has come to a sudden end - car was stolen last night from our drive whilst we were out at a party. They smashed our French doors glass and came in the house and found the keys. Stole the wife's polo gti too.
Devastated is an understatement
Oh jesus sorry to hear that mate!!!!

I hope the little scumbags get what's coming to them!!!!!

Just a question though - Normally in situations like this, they tend to follow you to find out where you live. Any recollection of anybody following you home over the past couple of weeks ago? (It happened to a friend of mine years ago with his Maserati)

One would you think that Audi would be able to find out where the car is nonetheless.

Sorry to hear your news, really really bad.
Yes sorry to hear this too typical re: the connect registration. Yeah I wonder if Audi can locate her I'm sure they could find out where the LTM sim is located by cell tower whomever provides the data service?

Well surely Audi know where it is due to the "find your car" feature on Audi Connect? Unless that is only enabled when Audi Connect is enabled? If so it seems a bit daft when it could be an anti theft tracker.

Simon, sorry to hear that, but like others have said if they're going to take it then it's best you're not there, regardless of how you feel about defending it.

I'd like to think I live in a safe area and the car is relatively incognito compared to some of the stuff around here, but you never know.

I hope it's discovered parked on a quiet street unscathed.

Yes, this is the most common situation according to Police. They see your car out and about and then follow you home. Happened to a mate's new RS5 and it was never seen again. They recon the car was shipped abroad to order. Time we S5 owners looked for a decent theft deterrent and share the info?

Another daft thing people have done on this site is post a photo with the registration plate showing. You'd be surprised how easy it is to look up the registered keeper using an unscrupulous third party access to the DVLA database if that's the car you want to nick, although for most lease users it is much more difficult if the car is registered to the lease provider.

Very sorry to hear about this. I've become over cautious with stuff like this since I had the Golf R and now this. Once you start looking into it you realise how common it actually is.

In regards to deterrents, I think the cheapest option is a Disclok steering lock which has become standard for me now and recently I've looked into the AutoWatch Ghost immobiliser which looks really good. I think that's the best thing out at the moment so definitely worth checking out.

That has a feel of 'urban myth' about it. I'm optimistic that DVLA would log all third-party searches for RK information, so there would be a big electronic trail to follow. Also if you had unfettered access to DVLA data, you probably don't need a registration. Just search for all RKs of a particular make/model in a postcode area and take your pick.

Plate "cloning" where a stolen vehicle is given the registration of a real one is probably a more valid reason for blurring plates.

Due to the nature of Simon's car (Nearly 50k coupe), I bet it's parked up somewhere as the clowns that have stolen it will be waiting a few days to see if it has a tracker fitted. Hopefully Audi can shed some info as to where the car's located via the built in sim!

Its much easier than that. The EXIF data within the JPEG contains the location it was taken. I could find the addresses of a lot of you who have posted pics within minutes.

If any of you are willing please post my car on your Facebook and Twitter pages. The Polo GTI was first spotted in Cheshire so the S5 might be around there parked up on a decent estate waiting a few days.

No, DVLA do not log requests if you have online access to their database. My business has monitored private parking areas which is managed by a third party who have this access to issue unauthorised parking tickets to the RK, but a quick phone call will get you all the info you need to check if a vehicle parked is legitimate or not before issue, but as you say you can also do a 'model/area search', but this enhanced access is for the emergency services.

Cloning is another good reason not to reveal your registration as you rightly mention.

Interesting and worrying point. Can I put you to the test with a PM on my photo's location!?

Simon, list your S5 on some online databases such as this one http://www.stolencars24.eu/en/index.php you never know, the more exposure the better.

I've read about this before, is there an easy way to block/remove the info?

1) Turn off location data on you device (smartphone worst culprit)
2) Strip data before posting picture

3) Dont post

Nope, but same as dufflecoats location.

[edit] Not doubting you can accurately do this, but at least mine is showing elsewhere on here at least. Maybe my phones GPS is out?
