alfaspiderman, if the noise is that important to you, I don't think you'll be able to resist the mk5 R32, compared to the gti there is just no comparison. As for the focus st, I've had a few run-ins with the locals near me and they don't sound anywhere near as good as I was expecting, again, the R32 sounds loads better imho. I was walking past a local vw dealership a couple of months ago and a mk5 R32 pulled out, presumably on a test drive, and spanked it through 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I just stopped dead with a stupid grin on my face and watched it fly up the road....I can't think of another new car that sounds anywhere near as good, as standard, for the money. Still, if it's not all about the noise, no harm in testing the gti just to be sure

There's a metal sided bridge in Upton-On-Severn that formed part of our test route in the manual R32... We did it at least three times with the windows down...

Cracking noise!

it sounds trivial but I believe it is that important to me yes - you try living with diesel for 4 yrs and then tell me engine note doesn't matter

too many of my miles are hamstrung by slow traffic and cameras to rely purely on outright pace for my driver entertainment

I want to get the occasional smile out of blasting up to 30/40/50 between cameras or winding the windows down in a tunnel at 5k revs

OK. GTi or R32? I am currently trying to make this decision myself.

I test drove an R32. Have to say beautiful car - but, it just didn't hussle along as fast as I thought it would have. Maybe just an illusion.

I also test drove a DSG GTi (not ed 30). I have to say, it had the opposite effect on me. I really didn't expect it to be so nippy and so much fun!

I think it comes down to a few of things:

a) If you want pure fun through handling - GTI
b) If noise is important - R32
c) Fuel consumption - GTI

At the moment, I think I'm going in the direction of the GTi with DSG!

Don't forget to consider a second hand Audi A3, one of the chaps in the office has just picked up the 3.2DSG, really really impressed, in fact, I preferred it to the R32!

Get an R32...

As good as I bet the V GTi is (and it looks impressive been hooned up the run at a local hillclimb like it was stolen smile ), the R32 is about more than on paper numbers, it's about the driving experience.

That engine and noise alone is worth so much...

Imho, as others here have said, it's what seperates 'good' cars and great cars. The GTi will be excellent, the R32 will be excellent, it's the smiles and the experience that will mark the R32 out!

Just the mpg, but it's not that bad in real terms, it's only that the GTi is very good.

why do we get the same sad sacs posting 'with a remap and driver training the XXX is better' FFS we are talking about the merits of a car as it comes not some tuned POS.

The R32 will blow a GTI into the weeds under any conditions. End of.

a lambo-umm the OP asked a question about a GTI or R32 and my point is stick to the facts about the car as it is sold. Agree an R32 is thirsty and heavy and running costs are valid points to compare. On your point about the twisties-an R32 would win there to.It is a faster car and everything ive read supports that imho.

Depends why you are buying the car in the first place though really.

The R32 you buy because you want an R32, you want the 4wd and 6 pot engine, and it doesn't matter it costs a bit more to run.

thank u whippy-the question is r32 vs gti ffs not wrx or mx5.I only bought the car so my wife could drive it (being small in her eyes). Drove a mark IV and didnt drive the Mark V until I drove it away. The torque is what I like. Im sure the GTI is a great car-each to their own

Yeah, makes sense if you don't want it 20% more than what the GTi offers smile

I thought this thread was more IV R32 vs V GTi, because a V R32 is quite different and alot more expensive isn't it?

I ran a IV Golf 4Motion for 3 years and loved it ,, when the IV R32 came out i had a long test drive in it and it was fantastic the torque the noise the solid feel of it was great , i can only imagine the V R32 is an improvment over the IV .. but having said that the running costs of my 4 motion did get ridiculous at times ,, it cost about double what my XKR cost in maintainence
