RE: Audi launches mega-diesel

Has anyone made a diesel that'll rev properly yet?
The ones i've come across hit brick wall at about 5k....
bloody tractor engines.....
Yeah, well I'd still prefer a low-down torquey engine to a peaky dyno queen. Think big-capacity Yank V8 (uncivilised yes, but it gets the job done) versus Honda VTEC four pot (yes i know the S2000 has the best atmo hp per litre rating, but it still lacks any useable low rev power). I know which one I'd take in a daily driver situation. Plus diesels are nice and frugal.

fooooook 2500bar is about 36800psi!!!!! how on earth do you control an injector at those pressures?
Not that difficult really.....in a nutshell you channel the fuel at that pressure to both 'ends' of the valve, so when the current opens the injector, it's not trying to fight against the pressure, and you can control them very accurately (hence the pre and post injection pulses to quieten the diesel 'knock').
In order to ensure a tight 'grip' on the injector, the voltage is (in some systems) upped to 100 or so volts at smaller currents (as oppose to 12 volts at higher currents).

The problem with trying to rev a diesel above 5k is that it (diesel) won't burn quickly enough, so you can't.....
They were messing about with diesels with methanol injection to try and increase the speed of the burn, but that's all gone a bit quiet (emissions?).
I reckon this is why, although good for torque, I don't think they will better petrol engines for the rev. happy amongst us.....

Just a thought, what sort of performance would that engine/trans produce in something like an Ultima?
Err, Gallardo anyone . . .
No serious. The nature of an engine like this is so far away from sport that it would be an insult to drop one in a car like that. It'll suit an A8 just fine.
