Audi S4 B6 - What can go wrong?
Discussion
All. I am looking at a Audi S4 B6 - I have found one on Autotrader that has been part exchanged to a garage close by.
The price is quite low, and hte advert states that the car is 'down on power' but no EML light is on.
What could the problem be? I have read that coil packs often go on these.
I have access to a VAG code reader - VCDS - would this show what the problem is?
I am looing for a rolling project car.
Thanks.

Cam Belt?
It’s a chain, and isn’t a service item. Well, not until the plastic guides crack and the chain goes a little slack and then starts to make far too much noise on start up.
Getting it rectified before it breaks seems to be the way forward....at a cost of around £2k.
Leave it until it breaks and it will be dearer.
Ran mine for 60k over 7 years, sold it at 100k having feared I’d pushed my luck on a car which was then nearly 11 years old.

Thinking cynically..... It isn't going to be a cheap or easy fix, otherwise the garage would do it themselves wouldn't they? I have access to a VAG code reader - VCDS - would this show what the problem is?

VCDS won't provide a definitive diagnosis but might point you in the right direction.
Prepare for a chain or combustion chamber (decoke) issue.
well said Jeff - hard enough to get information on these cars now - without having to wade through ill-informed replies
anyway - interesting point about the 'chain' service intervals - just a thought, once the work is done, what would be a safe amount of miles to clock up before further replacement?

In the case of this issue with B6 S4s sadly the information isn't hard to come by. The fault is common and often discussed (most recently on here just last week).
There will (very very likely) be a serious issue with the timing chain. Repair is very expensive (think £5k). With regular oil changes at the correct grade the replacement will last many years although uprated parts are available from the US if you wanted to invest.
The seller is probably aware of the issue and the likely cost of repair. It's being sold as an 'unknown' to allow their recouping the maximum amount of money as repair would guarantee them a loss.

I can't add much to this. Although I think the repair would be a bit less than £5K if it was just the chains and tensioners and no damage was done to the valves. There will (very very likely) be a serious issue with the timing chain. I've had my S4 since it was 6 months old. It was an ex demo with 8.5k on it. at 11k it developed a rattle and Audi did the tensioners under warranty. It has only done 46k and has never been anywhere but the main dealer for servicing. It has developed a rattle on startup again, but different from the first one. It runs a dream and is as powerful as it ever was.
If I was thinking of selling it, as good as it is, I wouldn't expect much more than £5k for it. So the one in the advert we are talking about with 100k on it can't be worth anything with an expensive fault. If it hadn't got a fault it would only be worth £3k to £4k.

Nothing has changed, the B6 S4 never had a cambelt. You really must stop posting about cars you obviously no nothing about.
That’s a bit chipper young chap. It’s the same 4.2v8 unit as the C5 RS6 which has 3 year replacement cycles.
Turns out also from further replies even though it is a cam chain now frankly it also needs changing to avoid a big fail cost.
