Which VR6 golf?
Discussion
HI, I am loking at 2 VR6 s on Fridy.
I only have a budget of £1300, and am looing for reliability over looks or resale value. Oh and I want 5 doors.
1995 N reg 119000 miles, Highline, Purple with leathers etc, Good interior, some bubbling on wheel arches, VW history upto 60,000 only, new clutch. Debadged grill. Seller has owned vehicle for 6 months Selling because can't afford to insure as main car. Needs wheel bearing. £1400.
1996, P reg, 140000 miles FSH with receipts, good condition, new ABS and front tires, 5 dr black. Good interior. £1250. Owner works for BMW dealership, Finance dept. £1250.
Heart says Purple highline, head says Black P reg.
What do you think?

do you know anymore about the history. if the 140k black one has had a headgasket and or timing chains changed then it could be a winner. I know of a fair few VR6 with close to 200k on them so dont be too scared by millage. Check for any blue smoke as the bottom ends are the weak point at high millage and the engine may suffer a bit but will continue to run for many more 0000s miles. Cam Chains go at around 100-120k and can cost 600odd quid to get changed, i believe engine and gearbox need to be seperated for the job so the lower millage highline could cost a lot more.
Also i personally wouldnt buy a car from someone who has only owned it 6months probably ragged the hell out of it realised it uses a heck of a lot of fuel or knows that some expensive bills are coming up.
http://www.vr6oc.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_view... ought to help you.
+ black one with black interior = subtle and nice. purple with purple interior Imo = borderline gay.
only thing you are likely to miss by not getting highline is AC

Went to view the P reg, (actually a 1996 N), and it was in v.good condition.
Very little wrong externally, No rust, and the benefit of smoked lenses all round and recently lowered 25mm. Original bbs alloys need a good clean. Car has had 3 owners. 1st for 10 years, and then 2 guys who work for BMW, who have both now moved onto Highlines.
Internally spot on, just the usual (repaired) wear to the drivers bolster.
Mechanically it seems great (so far!) and really smooth, with a comprehensive Service History. There is no mention of clutch or timing belt replacements, however both seem ok at the momment.
Car was MOT'd whilst I waited and failed on front pads and discs, so I knocked £250 of the asking price. The curremt MOT expires in 2 months.
So I drove off in a very tidy, highish mileage VR6 for a straight £1,000. There are a few issues such as the timing belt, but the car was so tidy that I felt good about buying it. Only problem ... no stereo, not the end of the world though!

TIMIMG BELT??????? what do you mean by this?
VR6 dont have a timing belt they have timing chains
Come on, give the guy a break - that's being pedantic.VR6 dont have a timing belt they have timing chains
On the subject of the timing chains, it is usual to do the clutch at the same time due to the huge overlap of labour on both. Also, if the timing chains need doing then apparently you know about it as they start to rattle like buggery (I did mine before they were needed, hence "apparently" ) so if the clutch is ok and the chains are not rattling then it is fine to wait until one of other needs doing.

I know someone who bought a total bargain of a mk2 golf VR6 conversion as the owner didnt know anything about the engine. The alternator/power steering belt had snapped and was hanging under the car and the guy thought it was the cam belt had snapped and he needed a new engine as he said the motor was running an then cut out and wouldnt re start. funnily enough one charged battery and a new belt and all was good!
