Hi, I've bought an 98 S4 and will need to change the ECU soon to a chipped unit, and possibly code another key. I'm an ex Audi technician and have Vag-com so doing the job isn't a problem but I will need the 7 digit immobliser code from the dealer. I have proof of ownership and ID, but I believe the stealers won't give this information out... any ideas where I can get this information? Any ideas what the legal situation is, ie are the dealers breaking the law by witholding this information? I don't mind if there is a small charge for it, but as you can appreciate I don't want to pay silly money for something I can do myself. Any help appreciated.

Audi UK will withhold this info for "security" reasons. The dealers not longer see the code when fitting parts such as dashes ECU`s etc. In the US Audi have to supply this info when provided with the correct info, log book proof of ownership etc.
With block exemption this may change??

My Nov2000 Golf has a small plastic tag with the spare keys which shows the SKC.
Might be the same for yours ?

Apparently all pre 2000 cars had the tag with the security code but I didn't manage to get it when I bought the car. I thought it was illegal for the dealers to withold the info? Are there any dealers out there who will provide this for a small charge? As I said I have proof of ID and ownership.

I have a similar situation with my '99 A4. Bought a used key on ebay and reprogrammed remote with no probs.
I know a locksmith who's gonna cut me a new key and hopefully recode the transponder.

My Googling has shown gadgets for reading your SKC from your ECU, but they're expensive.
I'm hoping the guy I know has one and does it. If not I have a backup plan. I've already removed the transponder chip from my all plastic key. Just have to figure out how to open the flip key without knackering it and replace the chip.

I'll let you know if indeed the code can be read.

As far as I can remember the flip keys are easy to open up. Can you post a link to the SKC reader? Mike

The SKC reader software is called VAGtacho for 4 digit SKC and VAGcommander for the 7 digit ones.
You will need to buy a special interface cable for your OBD port however... These cost between £30-50 from various websites including ebay.
Goes without saying you will need a laptop with a USB port!

I can only find this UK based one, all others I've found are in US.

http://www.alibaba.com/catalog/11863168/Vag_Pin_Co...

I keep finding info on software called VAG Tacho too that uses a specific interface lead to read login codes.

Google 'Audi key code reader' by clicking HERE

Any tips on opening my key to get the transponder out would be helpful. It looks pretty well sealed to me and I don't wanna completely knacker it.
Only solution I've found on net is to drill a small hole where the chip is. Might have to go this route.

Sorry.. I was thinking of another key when I said they were easy to open...!
Just bought a Vag-Tacho off ebay. £54. Hope it works, and if so should be a damn sight cheaper than sending the car to the stealers. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks for the advice/replies. Mike

No prob, I just came across this one. http://www.ajdirect.co.uk/vag-tacho-usb-mileage-co...

I wonder how the cable differs from the standard 16pin cable I have and use with VAGCOM?

Received the Vag-tacho... and it won't connect to my cars where Vag-com will. It shows an error message saying 'K-line short to ground, but it obviously isn't due to vag-com working ok. Still trying to contact the guy from ebay...................
