Apologies if this has been raised before.....This is my first post.

I am in the middle of test-driving various potential replacements for my Civic Type R. Current thinking is to get another hot hatch but one with a bit more give in the suspension and more torque.

The Mark 5 GTI is well ahead on points at the moment. However, before I fully convince myself I have a couple of questions on which I would appreciate the benefit of the collective PH'ers' wisdom:

1) I see that the Mark 6 Golf is coming along very soon. Have VW given an ETA on a Mark 6 GTI? Would be perfectly happy driving the "old model" but I would be concerned if I got one just before values took a hit because a new model came out.

2) I have only driven a 197 bhp GTI but have seen the Edition 30. Personally I prefer the look of the standard car and would rather save some money by getting a 2 year old car and maybe get it chipped if I felt the need for more power. Apart from the bhp boost, the styling and the added cost are there any major differences between the standard car and the Ed 30?

Many thanks

MkV1 is due next year sometime, but I doubt a GTi will be on the market till early 2010.

Ed 30 has different engine and turbo components to std GTI, but if you want certain options you can't get them with an ED30, eg full leather, sun roof etc. Gearbox, running gear otherwise the same between the two.

The Ed30 is supposed to be very 'tuneable' as its engine has more in common with the new S3, Cupra etc.

Love the ed30 we have.

The ED30 is a very nice motor. The engine is more tunable than the standard GTI and the extras you get do IMO make the car look a little nicer.

They will also hold their value a lit better than a standard GTI.

If you are after a good saving ona standard GTI then have a look at mine in the classifieds. Ignore the price, we could come to a deal on your Type-r.

Personally, a new ED30 comes in at £24k when spec'd nicely. I'd buy a year old S3.....better car and value imo.

S3 is only 3 door though - if that's what you're after.

I had the pleasure of a recent chat with Mr Tiff Needel, he really did not likthe S3, when i asked him about it i immediately got told aweful horrid car, the haldex AWD system is awful especially on track, so stick with a MkV GTI, i did.
