You can download a freeware version which gives you most of the diagnostic capabilities- you then just need to obtain an OBD1/OBD2 cable as appropriate (you can order these online)-
This version also lets you reset fault codes etc
-to start tinkering properly you need to purchase the full version but I suspect you really don't want to start doing that unless you really know what you're doing...

I'm running the freeware version with a USB to OBD2 cable, (one of the reccomended blue ones from e-bay) on my S4 avant.
In all, free version works well, but being free means it lacks functionality. An essential system if you like your home maintanance, will scan for fault codes, do real time logging of ECU outputs.
Free version is worth having but full version from ross tech gives you the ability to manually operate switches for testing/ clear fault codes/ change many control parameters and other things(apparently).
Fairly easy plug and play style, occasionally there are issues with aligning port numbers on the laptop with the VAG software, but good guides are available on Audi-sport / RS246 websites.
