Had my MKII GTI booked into my local specialist today to have a look and hopefully MOT it after 6 months off the road. I topped it up with oil last night, it was a bit dark so I just guessed the amount. Got into it today, started it and a huuuuge ploom of smoke emitted from the exhaust. had to drive it to the garage like that, I was leaving a trail behind me for 100 yards!
Thought i had totalled the engine. Guy at garage immediately said I had overfilled the car, had a check of the dipstick, yep well over, he reckons about 1 litre too much! He is having to drain it then run it to burn off the rest and thats before he checks it over. What an idiot!
Any other schoolboy errors people are willing to admit to?

Walked out of my house one day, a few years ago now, one of my neighbours across the road had to go away on a course with work and had left his Sierra with his wife for the week. She had been concerned about oil and water levels, as one does. She had called me over to check if she had filled all the correct "holes" with the correct liquid.

"you have put water where!!!!!!???"

Yes, she had filled the engine with water, as she had called her husband, the evening before, to ask where to fill it, he told her to unscrew the cap carefully and make sure the water is up to the top. So she did.

I told her not to do anymore but to get the local garage involved.

When he came home she gave him what for, for not giving clear and precise instructions. hehe

I thought I might spruce up the Tiv with a few shiny bits, so I bought a Leven fuel cap and an oil cap. Duly fitted, I then thought I would take a neighbour out for a spin.

What I didn't appreciate was that the TVR manufacturing tolerances were such that not all oil caps fitted perfectly...

...cue clouds of oil smoke from under the bonnet and my neighbour and I making a rapid exit from the vehicle thinking it was on fire!

Just got phonecall from garage who are getting my car ready for its MOT. A few 'issues' have arisen.
Firstly both front wishbones are shot so they will need replacving together with the ball joints. Front passenger side flexible brake pipe gone, that explains the spongy brake pedal and pulling to the left under braking. He's going to clean and waxolyl the underneath as its pretty rusty + MOT, total cost £320. Not too bad for another years motoring. I've got an insurance quote of £180 fully comp on a Classic policy which is over £150 cheaper than last year. Should be on the road early next week.

Two WD40 mishaps - cured my schoolmates squeaky brakes on his CB100 with the spray - I still laugh at the sight of him putting his feet down to slow him up!

The other one was on my MK1 escort. Driving in the dark and the wipers were shot - I thought the WD40 would just disperse all the water - it didn't
