Hi guys,

Just a quick question. At the moment the A8 is away getting a little repair, so I can't measure this myself and I can't find any dimensions of the boot online. What I am wondering is whether a 42" tv will fit in the boot of an A8L? The tv will be unboxed and not very protected so I can't put it on the back seats or anything like tat.

Thanks

Evening Ori - just checked mine - you have enough length for around 108cm, and width through the opening is about 90cm.

Using this - http://www.digitaldirect.co.uk/products_moreinfo3/... - as a benchmark for a 42inch jobbie, I think you'd just about manage it!

hey redleicester

Thanks for the reply - checked the tvs dimensions, looks like it will fit.

so far the A8 has been loaded up with old mattresses strapped on the roof to take to the dump, been used for my 17 yo son to ferry his friends around and now it shall be transporting a tv across half of england - what a practical car!

btw, how are you finding your one?

Bleeding brilliant to coin a phrase. All the toys take quite some getting used to, but the adaptive cruise and massaging seats are wonderful (those in the back won't shut up about the latter!). Biggest surprise so far has been the fuel economy, which yet again makes a mockery of the old V8 vs Diesel arguments - the car is noticably quieter than the diesels we drove, yet at a steady 70+ motorway run with the adaptive cruise on we're getting 28.8mpg!

The only thing that disappoints is the tyre noise - what with the laminated double glazingness, and the engine being silent at cruise, all you get is tyre rumble. Currently running Bridgestone Potenza things on the 19" alloys, so I'm tempted to try different tyres to see if they're quieter.

Hey RL,
I run P Zero Nero's on mine and they are not too bad for noise. Hear that Michelin are better though.
What engine is in yours as I have the 3.0TDi and can get 41 on a run dropping to 35 in mixed use.
Took me 3 weeks to FIND all the toys on mine let alone get used to them. Enjoy, they are brilliant cars, my clients love it so might have to invest in another matching one!

28.8 MPG from a V8? How is that possible?

I'm lucky to see that kind of figure from my R32 on a run. If I was an important, corporate gentleman and not an unruly youngster I'd have an A8 in a heartbeat, wonderful cars.

completely agree with the tyre noise problem - I reckon it's probably because everything else is so quiet so the tire noise is more noticeable - very annoying though!

and yep, the fuel economy is good - the wife can get 40mpg out of ours (3.0 diesel) although i only seem to manage mid-20s....wonder why that is wink

It's the 4.2 V8...28.8mpg is easy - careful (not gentle, just judicious), six speed gearbox, decent drivetrain and a gearbox that locks out the gears. Done another 500 miles in the last 48 hrs - down to the south coast, yesterday, then back up through london today. 28.6, so didn't do quite so well!

Ori - I know what you mean about finding yet more toys - the original purchase invoice for ours was £78k, so it's loaded to the gunnells with gadgets. The massaging seats are fab (and passengers have had fun with the same in the back, not to mention their own climate controls), the adaptive cruise is a revelation. I'd promised myself I wouldn't trust it, but thus far I have found it invaluable. Was also fun parked up waiting for a meeting yesterday to hear the aircon fire up: I was sat out in the sun, and the solar sunroof thingie was providing power to keep the car cool. Snigger.... whatever will they think of next?!

Leicester, any younger than 30 and I think it'd be a bit strange to drive an A8. I've always seen them as cars for your typical MD; a balding, middle aged, slightly overweight and lives in Surrey type. I can only assume you are at least one of these things! hehe

Seeing as I'm 21, I'll have to wait a while before any of those things apply to me, making me the archetypal A8 driver. Roll on hair-loss I say!

Steady! I'm 28 and have had my 4.2 for nearly a year. Admittedly I am pretty tall so it was a toss up between a few barges, but as long as you get the sport look they look more appropriate. Having said all that, I am thinking of an S5 next, has as much room in the front and it's a 'younger' car. Has anyone drvien a new S8? They're getting within budget now......

Snigger. Erm.... full head of hair.... middle age is ten years away, gym four times a week along with county tennis, much skiing, and Worcestershire! (Though I was in Surrey yesterday!)

Don't let your age determine what you can or can't drive - the A8 is my motorway hack, my Range Rover the family panzerwagen, the TVR for my hooning. I had a rep-car at 19, Saab Turbo at 20, Saab 9-5 Aero at 24, XK8 at 25, and first Tiv at 26 - most of which would be seen as being too soon, too young, too old, too whatever. Damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead - get what YOU want, not what society deems you should have. My ex was determined I should have a Golf GTi, but I stuck to my guns and had the 9-5 - frankly 230bhp vs what was then 180, plus all the mod cons, the extra space, the better handling.... etc! The game is forever moving on.

So the upshot is if you're worrying about your barnet - shave it off, then buy the A8 anyway!

Nah, they drive the S class/7 series. A8s are driven by young looking men with a full head of hair and a perfect life! wink
