I am thinking about buying an early RS4-2.7 bi-turbo version.
Can anyone indicate what to look out for with these cars?
Professional pre purchase inspection seems sensible-would an Audi franchise be ok for this? If not any recommended experts?
Is the optional sat-nav any good?
I would be looking for a car with about 60k miles and full Audi service history. Can anyone suggest likely prices?
Does anyone know what a timing belt change costs on one of these?
Are they generally reliable?
Any thoughts on performance upgrades?
Thanks.

RS246 and an evenings reading will answer condition and spec questions, the sat nav is complete garbage by the way.

A 60k, 20,000 miler should be 19-21k for a nice one.

Cambelt we do for 799 all in.

If taken care of and not abused/thrashed they will take care of you (make no mistake though, they are expensive to take proper care of).

Performance: buy a standard car if you can, they're missiles from the factory. If you really do want more speak to a few tuners to discuss what you want and don't be tempted to go for an el-cheapo remap whatever you do!

I'm sitting 6 feet behind a lovely one right now so feel free to ask if there's anything specific you need to know - will do my best.

stafford audi, quote "ebay prices" for any work - my main dealer £900 cambelt change turned into £395 at stafford audi and a main dealer stamp for the work too.

Great car and not that expensive to maintain as posted above. Shop around..MRC, QSt..S4 Woody (in Sutton) can do most of the maintenance jobs for you at good prices. Seriously consider a remapped/tuned RS4 because you'll never get your money back on a modded car. If there are problems its normally maf sensors etc and air leaks...but they can be sorted quite easily at a good price from those mentioned. You'll be surprised how much difference even a stage one modded example will be compared to a standard car. The majority of modded examples have normally been owned by real enthusiasts who have an extreme passion for these beasts and would have probably sorted out those areas that the original car should have come from the factory with!

Well, it's pretty poor against what's around today but I still use mine all the time and it works well enough. It doesn't take postcodes except London main ones and it's quite slow as it's CD based but it works once you get used to it and you have a latest disk. I like the fact I don't have to have standalone kits stuck to the windscreen, nobody's going to nick it and it's all part of the standard kit, fit and finish.

I suppose if you're used to the interface it isn't too bad but compared to the new DVD nav or even a TomTom I just get annoyed with it and give up.
