We took my wife's 08 A4 Cab (3.0 tdi) to Devon over Christmas and it proved to be potentially lethal!

No matter what settings I put the air-con on it was impossible to stop it steaming up to such an extent that water was running down the side windows, front screen was misted at the sides and I had to have the heated rear screen on all the time.

It has been in to the dealers and last week they said they had "reset" to controls and it should be fine. Before I take it back and put the case a little stronger I wondered whether anyone had similar problems or might know the cause? All the other A4 Cab's that passed us seemed completely clear in the same conditions so I assume it's not universal?

Thanks
Nick

I've an A4 cab and have no steaming up issues in fact I find that the car demists very promptly even when the blower is swtiched to a minimal level. Were you wearing damp clothing or carrying anything in the car that was damp?

Nothing damp at all, car would dry out almost staright away when we stopped at the services. Mrs A has been saying it was bad for some time but I thought it was just a "Woman thing" and ignored it, really is quite dangerous!

I'd be interested to know what the solution is as my Mazda seems to be doing the same thing, I'll leave it in the car park at college all day and come back to find it dripping on the inside.

These situations a virtualy all caused by either a leak into the cabin or damp or wetness of one kind or another !

Leaking heater Matrix?

If the moisture starts when you put the demister on the screen and goes away as soon as you stop then I'd be looking at the heater matrix. For anything else then I'd be looking at a leak into the cabin. Check under the soundproofing/insulation - very easy for i to be saturated and the carpet to seem dry.

Hi all, this is my fist time on here , so hello to everyone.i might be able to help on this concern, fault probably lies with the A/C unit software, get your dealer to check the software version of that unit. if not sucessfull also get them to the latest TPI,s from the factory. Hope this helps Al.

Thanks Al
I was told that the unit had been "re-set" just before Christmas but I don't know what version, it's going in again next week and I'll prompt them to check this.

To everyone who suspects damp, everything in the car inc underlay etc is bone dry and as soon as you leave the car in a sunny spot after stopping it clears the screens immediately which leads me to think the water is coming from the A/c unit itself or being drawn in.
Cheers
Nick

Hi Nick,

when you take the cab back in, just ask them to check the A/C unit software,Some functions are heavily restricted if the software version is too low. Thus resulting in your problem.

Just another thought also, your pollen filter could be the wrong way around or could be being restricted with debris. Being an 08 plate cab check the pollen first mate. !!

Regards

Al.

Don't forget air con usualy cuts out below 5deg so won't keep the windows clear. I would go with the heater matrix having a slight leak

As an update:-
The dealer has replaced what they describe as the heater flap which in effect was keeping the system on recirc all the time, works fine now.

Thanks to everyone for the pointers.
