sorry guys
ive tried to search this topic.and cant find the overview answers i need

my old man is giving me grief over buying petrol-think victor meldrew on speed!! and wants me to justify why i want a mkv gti vs a tdi.

and to be honest with all the reviews the tdi gets why am i looking at a gti, other than fact i am a 43yr old still trying to realise/acheive that teen dream of a proper hot hatch.

i never managed first time around ,but i had a 1 mk3 gti for 9months when i was 27 and it was the best car i ever had, i loved it so a bit of nostalgia plays a part of going for the gti.

so..... pros and cons of each.?
is there much in it from a performance/owning/cost/maintenence point of view or is it do i want my hot hatch or do i have a deisel??

thanks in advance

the gti doesnt look rubbish, goes better, sounds better, will hold its value better, and generally is better in every way except mpg. and with petrol prices at 84ppl and diesel at around 110ppl i would enjoy petrol while its cheap and really you are only going to get 10-20% better economy but with diesel costing 10% more wheres the saving?

if you are really watching the pennies then maybe just the tdi but really its just not the same.

well good luck and im sure they are both good cars, but if you have always yearned for a proper hot hatch and thought your old mk3 gti was the best car you have owned you will be blown away by the mk5 gti.

you only live once.

Do yourself a big favour and get a GTI, i have a Mk5 ( im selling it on here if your interested! ), it is quite simply the best car i have ever owmned, while TDI's are all well and good, they are nowhere near the GTI. Also with the way things are at the moment, there is no real economic benefit from Diesel over Petrol. There are some great bargains starting to come through now on various websites, so a bargain is assured.

And most importantly...you only live once,..so drive what you want, not what your dad wants!

Definatly the GTI - cheaper fuel, better to drive, heats up quicker, faster, sport and so on.

TDI - good fuel economy, lots of torque, poor performance, noisey, takes ages to warm up and only worth it if you do 20k+ miles a year. Even then it's not always justified.

Enjoy it - get a GTI!

There is no contest between a GTI and TDI. The TDI is a basic car, and will not bring a HUGE grin that the gti will. Its the type of car you will find an excuse to go and drive.

The GTI looks, drives, and feels much more special.

I was doing around the 30-35mpg in the GTI, so it wasnt bad at all!, still cheap to insure so running costs arent going to be too much differnt..

I stupidly changed my GTI for an R32 a few months before the credit crunch so have lost a small fortune, really wish i had kept the GTI.

How about a Golf GT Sport TSI? Great little engines with your supercharger at low revs and turbocharger higher up, sound real nice and performance very good too... whilst still managing decent mpg. Very almost as quick as a GTI, some of then dyno with 200bhp (Only supposed to have 170).

If its not for you then fair enough get the GTI, one of the best all-rounders on the road. The TDIs are only worth it if you are doing mega-miles or spending a lot of time on the motorway imo. There really quite noisy (I'm saying that as a previous MK5 owner) and not tremendously smooth, although the torque and mpg is nice.

GTIGTIGTIGTIGTIGTIGTI

I do about 27k a year and will be geting a GTI rather than a TDI 140 as i have worked our with the current high diesel prices the saving is about £450 which is not really worth the black smog

+1 for the GTI.

As already stated they are better in every way than the tdis apart from fuel consumption, and even then they are very good for a petrol.

They also take to chipping quite well.

If you are having second thoughts, have a look at a 3 door Candy White GTI with the 18 inch Monza 2s - looks fantastic.

Depending on your budget, and if you really want to finish your Dad off, also take a look at heart new R32s which are VERY good value these days smile

Petrol is 82ppl & diesel is 98ppl so thats a 19% premium for Petrol currently.

GTI combined is 35mpg GT TDI 170 is 50mpg combined thats a 30% difference thus there is a 10% benefit in going for the Diesel over the petrol + the purchase price of the TDI170 is lower than the GTI.

I'd take the GTI though over the diesel as it is excellent.

Not entirely true the 20kp.a. it depends on how long you intend to keep it. If you keep it for 5 or 10 years the TDI will be much cheaper

What about if you are only keeping it for 2-years, driving strictly arround town with occasional motorway usage, 5000 miles per annum. Diesel still a better buy?

No - if that were the case I'd go for contract hire and get the GTI Edition 30. Depn over 2 years is going to be harsh.

I'd take the GTI personally prefer the looks and its the Halo Model - I discount the R32 as its barely quicker but far more to run & nose heavier

i wouldnt really say that 10% on fuel is a massive saving though, of course there is a saving having a diesel but its hardly worth it.

and then you could talk of the saving of the insurance and tax etc but really who cares when its the difference of a couple of hundred quid a year.

Petrol is actually more like 93ppl for the GTI (super unleaded), and often more than that (last night cost me 99ppl...)

But fuel is only a small part of the total cost of running a car; depreciation will be by far the biggest cost on either model of Golf.

98/99 RON unleaded is 85.9p/l near me.

I'd go for the GTI without a second thought.

Well personally I dont think I could ever spend more than £10k on a used car (and wouldnt buy a new car) I'd also be buying at least 3 years old maybe 5 years old> In addition I would certainly keep the car going for at least 5 years so given the longer term depn becomes less significant annually as a cost .... but still high.
