I would say the price would be the deciding factor, the S5 is by no means slow with the V8, but the RS5 will be harder and faster, but probably cost you over twice as much unless you are prepared to wait a good number of years.
The problem won't so much be with the performance as on the road both will be very capable, but more the feeling you will get from being in something a bit more special.
The S models are good and generally quick with it, but I just feel if you are going to go fast you may as well go silly fast! (or get a 3.0tdi) as the running costs won't be much different.
I have quoted this a few times before but the insurance for my B5 RS4 was less than the B5 S4 and I compared side by side when thinking which to get.
Seem to remember somewhere someone comparing S5 to A5 3.0tdi and concluding that the tdi was the better car, although not quite as quick a better alrounder.

Yea I think even with the PCP the RS5 might well be double (monthly, if not in one hit). I had also read somewhere that the 3.0TDi was better than the S5... but weirdly because of the residuals, the oil burner is more expensive on PCP. Not much, but you don't get as much kit as standard either. Still, only a second to 60 slower is not bad at all. I also read that the S5 cab is coming out soon, but that the A5 cab in general is actually not that good.
The only people who think the 3.0TDI is better than the S5 are those that are concerned with fuel millage.
The S5 is a very good car, significantly better than the 3.0TDI. But the big 4.2 V8 is thirsty, 18mpg typical customer average.
Thats why the New S4 has a smaller all be it supercharge V6 engine, I;ve only seen one but its fuel average was 28mpg. I wouldn't be surprised it the ends up in the S5 later on perhaps when ever the next face lift is due.

I've had both from Audi corporate for extended test drives (ie 10 days)
S5 4.2. Brilliant, brilliant sound, handles well, smooth and very good car. Go for the manual. Very thirsty (12-16 on a blast; best I saw was 23)
S5 3.0tdi. Excellent. Go for the tiptronic. Epic cruiser. Good mpg, high at 40.
At the end of the day, if you do big miles and can foot the fuel bill go for the 4.2.
If you do low miles then the 4.2, no matter what.
If you do big miles or live on autobahns, then the 3.0 tdi.
Neither is *best* - both are excellent but different tools for the job.
I'm seriously tempted to trade in my A6 for one...

I really like the S5 and think it's a very satisfying and well-rounded package.
Extremely nice looking car on the 19s and with a few toys the interior is a genuinely lovely place to be.
Quick, flexible, characterful and tidy handling car too
A lot of those points the same for the 3.0 TDI but it's still a diesel and it's still boring as a result!

Is there any likelihood of the new 5-cylinder turbochraged engine appearing in the A5?
It's not really all-new, as I thought it was the old V5 that graced the golf, bora etc resurrected which a turbo whacked on. Course I could be wrong, as I would hope it would have some FSi gubbins in there. Weird that V8s are on the way out again... M3 is going back to turbocharged 6, Audi backing them out of the lineups. Merc holding steadfast for the mo however...
