any advice apprieciated
There's quite a lot of RS4/6 Owners who also own a TVR (Myself included until recently, when the TVR went)any advice apprieciated
I reckon the two compliment each others sensibleness and craziness nicely

B7 has he says 4.2 in the title.
?The B8 is a 4.2
OP, B7 is a cracking car. Looks fantastic, sounds great, a lovely drive. Maintenance costs are hefty, but then any car with this performance will be similar. Only other downside is there's not much space inside it, especially when you have the bucket seats (a must have IMO).
I like the way the B8 looks, it's bigger inside and has some updated tech (though the B7 isn't that bad) but it has two things going against it for me...(1) it still has a lot of depreciating to do and (2) the S4.
The S4 has what looks like a very interesting power unit. More tuneable than the RS4. It doesn't have the classic blistered arches and some of the other accoutrements. But this might not be a bad thing if you want more stealth. They are also much cheaper (even including tuning costs).
An S4 isn't, of course, an RS4. But I'm not sure the B8 is as iconic as its forebears anyway.
As and when my B7 bites the dust, I'll be looking seriously at S4s. Though hopefully that will be many years yet and there will likely be lots of other options for station dailies at that point
^^^ good advice from Murph
Also lots of guidance on www.RS246.com on what to look for when buying. Was invaluable source of info when I was buying mine, and some of the best examples come up on there for sale

An alternative to the Murph theory...
A B7 RS4 is a very involving car that is incredibly a capable drivers car given what it is at heart (a daddy waggon). Conversely, the B8 S4 is a normal A4 S line that happens to be incredibly quick in a straight line. Obviously my opinion is my own, but to me the S4 and RS4 cars are a gazillion miles apart in what they offer as a driving experience.
So, the Gump theory - get an RS4 - then chop out the middle box and enjoy =)

I had one a few years ago and I still regret getting rid of it, such a all rounder and capable in all weathers.
As mentioned RS246 is the place to go for advice, plenty of things that can bite you if not done, especially I'll cooler pipes, Aux radiator, make sure DRC is new generation one!!!
Brake discs are expensive if needed, for re sale you need buckets, flat bottom wheel and sat nav.
If you can the ones to have are MRC stage 2 tuned with de coke. No matter what you'll not regret it, good luck

If it sounds like there is a gold ball in the door trim bouncing about over bumps, that's DRC.
I've never seen an ad for a car that hasn't had the system replaced at least once - but as far as I understand, once it's done they're quite a bit less likely to go again (but it's still one of the more likely bills).

Re: the DRC fail, as well as the clunk it's likely you'll see misting on the damper unit before it lets go. Two of mine were replaced before I bought the car and I've had one replaced under manufacturer's goodwill (5 years or 75k miles IIRC); it probably helped that the car had a full Audi service history.
The standard oil cooler pipes are rubbish: they have crimped steel connectors which attach to the alloy cooler, so you get galvanic corrosion (ie they weld to each other), then the connectors split and the oil leaks. I've replaced mine with far better quality pipes with ali connectors from JHM in the States, but I also had to replace the cooler. Total cost was about £1k (self-fitted). Audi will relieve you of about £1500 to replace the oil cooler and pipes with the same rubbish quality ones.
A full set of discs and pads will stiff you for about £1800 at a main dealer, but I replaced mine myself with OE discs/pads from Stoke Audi.
