2.0 TFSI Drinking Oil
Discussion
Well, just spoken to my local Audi dealer and they tell me that thats fairly normal consumption. Infact he stated that 0.5 ltr every 600 miles is their guideline.... bks!!
Seems very fishy to me. Huwp I'll PM you if thats ok then maybe give you a call a bit later when I finish at work if you can send your number over.
Thanks for the help.

Hi all,
I have this engine in an A4 S Tronic. I have covered some 5000 miles over the past 6 weeks and have had to top it up twice with oil.
Is anyone aware of any issues with this engine regarding this or is this normal???
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Chris

Ah OK, firstly you are going to have to monitor the situation very carefully, there is a wide variance in oil consumption;
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&biw=1680&...
VW have their own limits (lots basically) and every engine will be different, my one uses 1 to 1.5 litres every 10,000 miles.
That seems fairly reasonable, I wouldn't be unhappy with that.http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&biw=1680&...

I've started a log so I can keep track of how much I'm getting through. At the moment its seems to have been approx 1 ltr every 2500 miles.

It recommends to top it up by 1 ltr in the manual which is what I've done.
Sorry? Why didn't you top it up by the amount required to put it to the top Mark on the dipstick? And what does the manual say about topping up? That it's a litre from the bottom to top dipstick marks?Sorry but consulting the manual just strikes me as being a pretty arse about face way of doing a top up!!
Thought I'd do a quick update on this thread for those out there with the same engine and same potential issues.
Over the past 12 months the oil consumption has gradually got worse to the point where I was adding 1 ltr of oil every 550 - 600 miles. During its long life service I asked them to check it out but they said that nothing was wrong.
After a bit of research and general disbeleif at the amount of oil it was getting through I spoke to another dealership near where I work (Epsom Audi) and they agreed to carry out an oil consumtion test under warranty. They completed this test today and have just informed me that there is a problem and that they will need to do a full angine rebuild including pistons and piston rings etc.
Overall I'm quite happy with this, at least they have admitted a problem and it shows I'm not alone in thinking that that sort of oil consumption on a modern petrol engine is crazy!!
Just wanted to add it so that if there is anyone else having the same issues then don't give up pursuing it!!
Cheers

These engines are either not being built properly at the factory, or their new owners are babying them from new. Given the gridlocked state of the country and everyone doing 60mph to save fuel (well get in the feckin inside lane and save fuel then, grrrr), high load and high rpm oppurtunities are rare, ergo the bores get glazed and oil consumption increases.
Having said that, german engines do like a drink. Every VW, BMW and Audi I've every owned drank oil. My Mum's old 1994 Corolla used nothing at all between it's 16,000 mile oil changes.
I can't comment on how it was driven when being in but I certainly don't give it an easy life. I do about 25k a year so it gets a lot of work and part of my commute includes some great back roads. Other than the obvious issue this engine is brilliant. Hopefully it will be even better when I get it back.Having said that, german engines do like a drink. On a side note I'm guessing I'm effectively going to need to run this engine in again? What are peoples thoughts with these engines? Low revs for 1000 miles or high revs everywhere and break it in?

Reading this post, I was compelled to check the oil. Open the bonnet no dipstick!!!
Then go to check into the MMI, under car settings - oil levels. It says check in 2 mins, engine needs to be off. So I turn the engine off, go ino settings for oil level - says engine needs to be switched on to configure.... WTF!!!
Even tried again after going for drive, lifted the hood.. Doesn't work!!
Any ideas anyone????

You need to turn on the car and let it run for 2 mins on a flat surface then turn it off but leave the key in the ignition so the mmi is working then try checking. Should work then, if it doesn't then pass!!

I posted earlier in this thread that my Polo had required a new engine at 5,000 miles. Popped into the local dealer yesterday as I now have a turbo issue. Anyway, the same mechanic who had worked on replacing the engine came out with me to diagnose the knackered turbo: he confirmed that VW have now acknowledged a problem with the piston rings in the 1.4 TSI.
Not having much luck with that car. I hope they get it sorted for you!!Chris

Interesting to see your views on 'breaking in' and then see that every VW, BMW and Audi you've ever owned 'drank oil'.Having said that, german engines do like a drink. I've always been an advocate of properly running in engines when new and every VW, BMW, Audi etc etc I've ever had, including the ones I have presently, uses little or no oil between services.
In fact the only car I can remember owning that did use appreciable oil was a 2.6 190E I had back in the nineties, bought as a 6000 mile ex demo.
What am I doing wrong?
To be honest I don't have much experience of the "breaking in" stage, the only car I've ever had from new was a 1.6tdci Ford Focus and that was utter st!! It deserved to be thrashed!!
I don't think in general though my car get treated badly. The car in question having the rebuild gets driven about 25k per year, a lot of that is obviously motorway but it also gets some country lane action (about 3-4 miles every morning and evening when I go to and from work. I tend to drive it as was intended for that section.

No fault with turbo found. But needs new clutch pack and oil breather kit!! Won't be keeping this car beyond the warranty period!
My thoughts too, warranty runs out in about 14 months so unless I can pursued Audi customer care to extend it (pigs flying springs to mind) then I'll be getting something else. A6 bi turbo currently springs to mind!! Chris

Hi
I have had my A5 2.0T from new on a 59 plate and have covered 59,000 miles mostly motorways, it is drinking 1litre of oil for every 700 miles and its getting worse. Audi say this is within tolerance . Lucky for me it's a company car as its costing a fortune buying all this synthetic oil where is it all going. This car is going back to the lease company in November I pity the poor sod that buys this car at auction. This is def my last Audi .
Cheers
That's not within tolerance I don't think but check your manual. It took quite a bit of persuasion from me to get them to do something. They did it eventually though and even gave me a cheque for £500 to cover the cost of all the oil I bought!I have had my A5 2.0T from new on a 59 plate and have covered 59,000 miles mostly motorways, it is drinking 1litre of oil for every 700 miles and its getting worse.
