I've read the scare stories on the Internet about cam chain rattles, tensioner guides etc.

Apparently regular and decent oil helps, so recommendations and the amount of litres please?

Opie oils quote oil that meets the VW504.00 specification.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-749-vw-50400-oil.aspx

The 504.00 oils are all good oils, so make your decision based on any brand/price preference you have.
