Afternoon chaps. I am wondering if I may ask for your experiences with Mk5 GTIs.

Mine is an 06, coming up to 100k and When it gets warm through there is a slight knock/tappy noise. I am aware that the cam chain and tensioner loosen up a little over the life of the engine and this can cause the noise as described about but I have also heard it can be the injectors that can be heard..

Which is it? It is service time, I am looking to get a big service done including belts, tensioners and the water pump (and a clutch too for peace of mind) so I am trying to find a definitive answer regarding this potential cam chain/tensioner issue. Obviously, I would prefer to get everything done at the same time to save a couple of quid on labour and also prevent my car from having to be dissembled more than once.

Does anybody have any experiences regarding this?

All input greatly appreciated.

The top is a belt but the very bottom is a chain, from what I have read.

I am happy to be shown to be wrong though smile

I've just checked the book and the belt isn't due for two years and the water pump was done at the same time in 05/2012.

I feel like a bit of a bell end for missing this information but I'm also chuffed that I don't need to get it done at the moment biggrin

Potentially daft question here, would they still be able to change the chain and tensioner from the bottom end without taking the belt off too?

Also, does anybody have a rough idea of the cost of a clutch change?

I shall. I'm half tempted to just change the belt, chain and tensioners just for peace of mind. It would probably be for the best if I decided I fancy a remap in the future.

How would I find out the engine code? I shall have a squint.

Belt was done in May 2012.

I've grabbed the service manual, it's a BWA.

Thanks. I shall get it good and warm on the way home from work, check it out when I get there and report back in a bit with where the noise is coming from.

Cheers!
