S3 intermittent throttle response

I am posting this on behalf of a mate who has just bought a V reg S3 (210hp). His temp gauge seems to be constantly at 60 degrees only going to 90 degrees (normal temp) when driving in town. Could this be connected to the fact that on occasions when he puts his foot down in any gear there is no response. he then takes his foot off the gas and then puts his foot down again at which point the car responds as expected.
He only brought this last week so is understandably a bit concerned. the car has only done 70,000 miles and has full Audi service history.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
