More progress.

Can someone tell me how the cooling fan circuit is supposed to work? I think I've lost the feed to my otter switch.

Swapped the alternator today. As soon as it started the difference was obvious. It idled from cold, no hunting or grumpy behaviour, total transformation. Only problem was that the charge was low, registered around 11-12V at idle. The belt was also a bit slack and we found the pulley with the new alternator was smaller than the old one. Once that was swapped it charged at 14.4V across the rev range. And it just idled sweetly, seemed to improve actually.

Big thanks to the TVR club members and Joolz who set me on the right track.

Agreed a deal on the paintwork yesterday, full repaint, same colour. Maybe shadow chrome the Spiders, will play that by ear. It just makes sense as the OE lights need to go back in.

Another small leak from the rad was found today, that's it's last hurrah! Off to be re-cored next week. Deposit on a new dash placed, after i saw it I had to go for it!

Last bit of playing today was the exhaust. Quad pipes are coming off and I have a place making two new ends to be welded on. At the same time I'll sleeve the exhaust. At some point the precats will come out but that's for another time.

Kind of committed to it now, but the end result will be worth it.

How long it's been like this I have no idea!

Hence the fans randomly working and then not at all!

Radiator is off and away. Swirl pot and header will be cleaned and polished, that'll be 'fun'. Have given up with the exhaust idea, will be buying an ACT as the original is tatty and has been repaired previously.

Dashboard price is a bit scary now but it'll look fabulous, I have no hesitation in buying it as it's something that will always be a focal point.

stty job but....

Found a polishing kit in Halfords, £15 well spent. Soaking the brass overnight in ketchup to see if it'll bring it up?

I'm sure it could be better but TBH I didn't want it perfect. Little thing to do in the scheme of the rebuild but it made me smile.

Found a pair of new old stock OE lights tonight. £35, will use mine as templates on the rebuild.

After looking as the exhaust for a while I figured it is what is. If someone wants a quad outlet stock system then it's great. Spending time and money returning it to stock is pointless.

So.

New lights have turned up....

Pretty chuffed with them TBH. A few more weeks the car will be in paint. I'm thinking of it as a noisy Xmas gift.

The radiator is back, we managed to get another core in. £230, very pleased. The old core was about 80% blocked!

The old.....

I cannot believe I have only just found your thread. Great read and a stunning looking Griff, the exterior colour and interior work really well together.

As others have mentioned, looking at the various mods someone in the past has clearly spent a lot of time on money on this Griff. Good choice on the Bilsteins, I have these on mine and I am very pleased with them. I don't actually mind the rear lights but I do prefer the standard versions.

Looking forward to your updates and good luck with the restoration.

Thanks Matthew, it's off for paint over xmas so with all of these bits and pieces completed will make a very nice car for the future. Looking forward to getting the cooling etc back in tomorrow. The rear lights are 'ok' but the body has a few things which are need attention, the trouble is if they paint the rear and the bonnet to their high standards it'll just stick out like a sore thumb. I am getting a hell of a deal on the work, the original rear lights really make the Griffith for me tbh, they work so well with the door cut.

There was a guy on Facebook looking for those SE style round rear lights. I pointed them in this direction. Have they been in touch?

Hi, not as yet but I have put them on the TVR forum as well. They are good quality units and will be removed very carefully.

Refitted the radiator today, the engine bay looks far cleaner. The HT leads are a right mess, will have to sort that out as well as tidy the wiring. AFM will be cleaned up some heatproof tape added to make the shields look better. Have been mulling over replacing the tensioner with a JE bracket, it's a huge lump for what it is.

When the exhaust arrives we'll trial fit to make sure everything goes together. For paint it'll be removed so he can get underneath with undercoat.

Really should have painted the manifolds when they were off, hate the thought now but it's likely to be done. Dashboard is a while yet, carpets are now just floor mats as the rest have come up well. Hood screen replacement and wheel refurb after paint.

Too much going on!

There's light at the end of the tunnel now. Financially it's creeping up there but it has not been a simple tarting up process! Looking forward to the next four to six weeks, if it could come out to play at Xmas all painted it would be awesome. I just want to hear the new exhaust TBH biggrin

I have the JE bracket on mine. Partially due to weight saving but mainly as mine kept eating tensioners. After buying two new ones I decided enough was enough when for the third time it developed an annoying rattle.

You are not wrong, it is a huge lump compared to the JE bracket.

If your one is working fine then maybe just get the car back on the road and add it to the wishlist.

Hi, mine is 'bouncing', it looks odd. It's ancient and has a little play so figured I'd junk it rather than waste time replacing it. That would also reduce the amount of things i have left to clean smile

PAS leak....

20x30x7 £1.20 oil seal in the pinion probably failed? Exhaust will be coming Thursday, just cannot wait! Also had a chat with the paint shop, we are aiming for the car to be in there within two weeks, there is a lot of work to do so the plan is four weeks to complete everything.

Interested to see what you think about the exhaust once fitted. Currently considering options for my Griff 500.

Absolutely. I'll put a clip of it up and let you know. Looking at it now it is obvious that they have repaired the piece from the end of large diameter right the way a along. Hence why it was so low!

Pictures.......

Also there was always an issue with the handbrake light, traced to the wiring under the handbrake. Brake level is wired into the same circuit so the manual reckons. Looking at it backlit I am glad I went for a new panel as well as the dash.

Video clip later biggrin
