Ive finally got around to trial fitting the impeza rack to the griff. really is pretty straightforward.
Ive posted a pic in my winter refurb thread,

itll work out great, no real chasssis mods, the rack bolts into original tack mount points. and alignment of the rack is within 1mm or the original rack.

you need to cut a new spline on the pinion (unless you want to cut and weld a spline, but i dont), change some pipes around etc, but really pretty easy stuff.

ive got to mount the electrc pupm, but ive used this type pump before, so its just a case of making an appropriate bracket for it.
All sounds great! And a walk in the park for a man that fits engines over the weekend smile What i want to know is when can you fit mine?????????
Look forward to seeing the car with the LS3 and steering mods

Very interesting thread.

I remember my BV was lovely at speed but a bit of a bugger when manoeuvring slowly.

At the time when I drove PA Tivs on test I just didn't like the feeling of power steering at speed.

An option that gave you assist varied by speed would be interesting but wouldn't it be tricky to get right?

FYI the Mitsubishi EVO rack is faster and that's what I will be using when my TVR rack dies

the pump i use has a pressure sensing "widgit"...(dont ask me how it works, you can hear the pump spin up when pressure is required to turn the wheels when stationary), but you only get pas when the sensor detects resistance, so nothing at speed as the steering inputs are so tiny. The steering becomes less twitchy at speed, and certainly less tramliney, as there is some resistance in the hydraulics to those minor movements, so 130 plus speeds which used to need 2 hands, are now one hand, as there is far less snatching going on. (trackdays in last car fitted with htis setup)

ive not looked at the evo rack, as this one is so easy to fit, and ive used it before, and the ball centres are within a few mm or the tvr one, so geometry wise, i cant find anything better.

i might fit rose joints to the steering arms instead of track rod ends, so that i can have some rack height adjustment to tweak geometry further...we will see.

On a serious note would like to meet up and compare conversions and have a look at the rack set up if possible?? You where the one person i missed at the Growl!

Yes but they couldn't fix mine.

Spent the day going back to my manual rack.

How can I say this,............. IT'S AWFULL!!!
Hi Pete,

You are very conscious of movement in the steering wheel.. I thought of you today when I sat in a new 911 at the Sunday Service today. An unexpected amount of movement in the steering wheels to make me see how much reached the road wheels...pretty sure you would speaking with the service manager!

Very intresting! Manual rack is heavy and slow with 225's, and the TVR servo one is all over the road at speed but fine for end catching. What year is your impreza rack? Will we see more phots's? Per

The Vectra pump you use could that be used on the standard TVR rack and make a difference ?
And would the mounting change, I would be keen for one do you have part numbers or buy from you
Cheers

i have used a couple of pumps on my previous cars, with this rack.

what i know

an LS steering pump pushes too much fluid and makes the steering way too light
the saxo type pump seemed to have insufficient fluid flow, and when turned fast, on the bench, the pump couldnt keep up with the required movement
the vectra pump worked out fine, gave an appropriate level of assistance, yet nothing discernible at speed. the staaring actually was slightly damped and less twitchy at speed, due to the inertia in the hydraulics, so tramlining (i had 245 x18 fronts, 295 x 18 rears) was far less of an issue than previously.

the car this setup was fitted to handled spot on

i dont have part numbers, but ive popped a few pics in my winter refurb thread.

Looking to try the Subaru rack/electric pump over the winter. Is it the Vectra C type pump? A bit of reading lists the ECU to be built into the pump, but the actual rack has a sensor to feedback to the pump. I think this may be to sense if the steering wheel is being moved, so that the pump is not constantly running - any ideas?

reading my notes again, its the astra mk4 trw ephs pump circa 2003, not the later can bus type pump
this pump senses the pressure in the pipes somehow, and only applies fluid when resistance is felt (you can hear the pump spin up when turning lock to lock statinary, but jack the wheels off the ground, and the pump stops sensing resistance.

dont ask me how is works, just know it does!

Oopps...should've waited before bidding on that bargain Vectra unit on Ebay....Oh well, it can go stragiht back on there!!

I think there are two type of TRW pumps for the Astra, I've put some photos underneatgh, so you recognise if it's either of those?

Also, do you remember what type of spline required cutting in the Impreza rack pinion shaft ( 9/16" 36 spline?)

'Gen 1'

or

'Gen 2'

the bottom pump, but make sure it has TWR (or trw) on it

re the spline. i originally cut a 9/16ths, but had to cut the pinion down to get the UJ in the chassis..its pretty tight. that meant cutting the spline across a a hardened pin in the pinion, or pushing the pin out, cutting the spline, then repinning. first time i pushed the pin out, i bent a shaft it was so tight

I also decided i didnt like to take that much material off the pinion, so i used decided to use ford focus uj which converts 17mm hex pinion shaft to 9/16, so i machined the 18mm round pinion down to 17mm hex, (a bit oversize so it was a really tight fit) in the UJ, and opened the 8mm bolt hole on the UJ to 10mm (which also cuts a retaining groove along the side of the pinioin, and used a hardened bolt to pin through the pinion and UJ

sounds like a faff, but it was straightforward,

you could always cut a spline the same as the one on the end of the steering column (which is 3/4 i think, but I preferred the hex UJ as i could weld that to the shaft if needed as it was folded metal, not cast,

i just bought a std 9/16 shaft and cut/machined the ends to suit.

Daz. If all your steering column joints are ok and your track rod ends, there is play in the rack bar and pinion. Also check the track rod to rack swivel joint under the gaitor.
There are no parts for this and lordy, I tried!
