VW mirrors on a Griff
Discussion
You may have seen my posts on converting a Griff from the Citroen mirrors to VW Corrado mirrors.
I was initially concerned that the Citroen mirrors are driven by 3 cables, whilst the VW nmirrors use 4. However, there is a second (2 pin) connector that is unused in the door which provides the last cable required.
Wiring is thus not a problem. However, the mirror ECU (located beneath the steering column) must run a certain type of chip (and one wire needs to be snipped) to be able to run the VW mirrors - the later the ECU the more likely it is to support the VW mirrors.
The moral of the story is the conversion is not as simple as I thought and I may need to change the mirror ECU to enable the fitment of the VW mirrors.
Overall project cost is climbing - if you are considering the same move my advice is not to remove mirrors/snip wires until I have resolved the next steps...

Because I don't like them (especially the rubber bands around them) - they create a lot of wind noise and if you fold them in they scrape the door tops. A few others seem intersted in this change, which is why I posted this.
In my opinion the VW mirrors are a neater, cleaner shape. TVR also fitted them to the last 100 Griffs...
Only my opinion though....
Yeah. I'll have to make do with Tuscan S/T350C mirrors (I could have said T440R, but they fitted a slightly more aerodynamic front to the VW mirrors to the motor show car).
The factory have confirmed my mirror ECU will run the Veedub (sorry, Tuscan S) mirrors. I just need to snip the black wire in recess 16 (sounds a bit bomb disposal, doesn't it?). So good news for me. Anything much later than mine (Feb 1999) would be a problem, necessitating messing about with relays or acquiring a new mirror ecu or from a written off cerb/tuscan/tamora.

I was just seeing if you were paying attention
Yes, earlier dammit!!!
Two chances of them being ready: Slim and none, and Slim's out of town....
I got two mirrors from a scrap yard but sacrificed one in the interests of figuring out how they worked. Then I sourced brand new ones at a lot less than the VW price - so ordered them, but they won't arrive until next week. Then I still need to paint them... assembly and wiring is the easy bit now.
Currently my Griff is sans ears. More aerodynamic and I'm getting a lot less stone chips on the mirrors! Makes driving on the motorway more interesting though!
